How can I keep my rambutan seedlings growing
« on: September 28, 2017, 12:12:18 AM »
I am on my third batch of rambutan seedlings in the last two years, without any success.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong but usually once my seedlings reach about
8 or 10 inches, they die off.

Can anyone provide some advice please?

Thanks
Jo

Rambutan is more tropical than longan or lychee, and the seedlings need consistently warm temperatures.
Have you considered a heat mat and growing them inside an enclosure under a grow light?

It's not uncommon for lychee or rambutan to show stalled growth at about 5 to 9 inches. Before that the little plant is relying on energy stored in the seed.

Also I'd use a soil type that retains water well, because you need the soil to remain constantly moist.

Thanks for the advice.

I have my seedlings in a green house which has 50% shade cloth on the sides and 75% on the roof.
I have not considered using a grow light as we have alot of sunshine here in the Cayman Islands.

I was actually thinking that the weather here was too hot for them

Note I have both longan and lychee tree that fruits.

This time around I have used a bit more vermiculite in the potting mixture to help keep the moisture
level higher.

Hopefully, this third time will be the charm! Thanks.
