Mango Panicle
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:30:35 PM »
Hi,
I live in Southern CA where I have two mango trees, Carrie and Nam Doc Mai that are about 3ft tall. I was wondering that once the panicles fall off the tree, will new lateral branches grow from where the panicles originated from? I ask this because I think I pruned at the wrong time year and instead of new lateral branches forming it produced flowers/panicles.
Thanks a lot!

I’m sure someone with more experience  can/will correct me but my understanding is that the type of growth is dictated by average temperatures and rainfall. If the tree is actively growing and average temps are below 65 then you will get panicles. If the average temps are higher then you will get vegetative growth. We have tricky weather here in SoCal because our daytime temps can be high while the lows at night can drag the averages under the bar. Most of my mangoes had vegetative growt starting in may/June. All growth before then last year were panicles.

As for rainfall, I think mangoes also like the flower after the dry season.
