So what's the story of this trees origin?  I don't think I've ever asked.

Based upon what I heared, the var. discussed in this thread is native from Flórida, but don´t know if it´s a hybrid.
But exists fruits that are red outside and aren´t hybrids, like the Fruta-da-Condessa – (Annona reticulata), the Pindaíva – (Duguetia lanceolata) and the Marolo – (Annona coriacea).
Short text about these annonas: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.infobibos.com%2FArtigos%2F2007_2%2Fanonaceas%2Findex.htm

The Araticum-de-Raposa (annona cornifolia) is native from Cerrado and has a red skin too. It isn´t that tall, but grows slowly. I have a young plant, currently without leafs. :)
To know more about her: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=pt&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.colecionandofrutas.org%2Fannocorni.htm&edit-text=

Noel already addressed this issue in a different thread (it is not a hybrid, just a red squamosa)

Noel,

nice!  thanks for sharing the pics!  Your Big Red really is in my opinion a better selection than Kampong Mauve...but I still haven't heard the story of the origin of the Big Red, and what the parentage is.

FLnative,

wow!  is that a tree u got from me?  if so I'm amazed at how large it is...(i'm guessing it was just grafted this spring? but maybe it was from 2013?)

I can't believe it's already got a fruit.

I wish I had more for sale, but right now I have to graft some...I have bunches of requests, but limited rootstocks this time of year.  but I will get some grafted one way or the other.

Adam
Really glad to hear you are propagating them. If I ever lose mine, I know where to get one! The original BR was from a seed that I picked up at a Broward Rare Fruit Council meeting. It was from a delicious red skinned sugar apple that someone brought in, but back then I did not ask about the origin of the fruit like we would automatically do now. It proved to be a real winner.

Here is a pic of a Big Red seedling fruit I picked this morning.  The tree is growing in a 5 gal pot and is 2.5 years old.

Here's one from my 2 year old seedling tree.  It was 13 oz, and tasted just like the mother trees fruit.

My impression, Red/Purple Sweetsop leaves a little darker and a little more elongated than regular Green.
What is your opinion?

Is it possibly to find big red for sale in larger sizes closer to fruiting?

here is one of the nicest Big Red fruits I will get this season.

I only got about 7 fruits, between two small grafted trees (one is in a 7 gal, the other a 15 gal)

but it's well worth the effort and space that's required to produce these delicious and beautiful fruits.

(to those who have requested seeds, I will be sending them out ASAP...most likely next Monday)

I got it from a fellow grower. The tree appears to be pretty big compared to most sugar apple tress i'ves seen.
15ft by 15 with a 10" trunk at the base.

First time i had a red one, flavor is good, grit near the skin. Only slightly more seedy than a Gefner
Hopefully i can get some more this week.

I got it from a seed from Noel. The tree is 2-3 X slower growing than any/all anonas I've grown. It's over three years old 6' and it flowered on it's first year on the ground. I wouldn't compare it to geffner cause it taste infinitely better. It is much seedier than Birula or other anonas. It's a very good sugar apple.

nice fruit JF!

my crop was a failure this year!  I think this wasp nest messed up the fruit....they chew the stem to hasten the fruits ripening process? or to get sap to drink when there is drought?  or maybe it was a fungus?  but all the damn stems on my fruits looked infected, and chewed into...I lost about 8 really nice fruits!

Thanks Adam

I had 12 fruits, I have 3 small ones left. I'm going to leave them on the tree since they are well adapted to our climate. Before I prune at the end of February I'll harvest them ready or not.

I am a sucker for the appearance of red sugar apples.  If the taste is as good as growers say, it sounds like Big Red is a winner.  I look forward to when you prune you tree in February, Frank.  I'd like to purchase a couple of scions from you then.
