Is it a waste of money ordering Mangosteen seeds on-line?
« on: October 26, 2017, 08:30:34 AM »
Hi everyone.

I was wondering if it is worth my money to orgder mangosteen seeds on line. The seeds will take 2-3 weeks to arrive from the US to Uganda. Will they still be viable? They are quiet expensive so I dont what to spend money on unviable seeds.

Any thoughts welcome!

Thanks

Why would you get it from the US?
I believe only Hawaii can grow it.

You might be able to cut down on shipping time if you get it from SE Asian.
Might save you a few days on shipping.

there are Asian sellers on eBay that can sell you 2 - 3 foot mangosteen trees. why mess with seeds when you can get a jump start?

Thank you for your ideas. The mail from South East Asia to Africa would be slower than the US to Africa! I got s some seeds of other plants from the Phillipeans that took a month. Plants would have to be FedEx I imagine and I am not sure about the paperwork involved. Might get complicated.

I think Garcinias tend to take a long time to germinate.
I had a G. dulcis pop up earlier this year so its been sitting in the pot for over a year.

As long as the seller packs it well, with some sterile moist medium I think you should be fine.
I'd say its worth the shot

Just to answer your question , I ordered some from a seller on this forum who lives in Costa Rica. Several of the seeds were germinating in the packing material. I now have 5 or 6  young seedlings growing in a seed tray with a humidity dome, growing in the window sill.

Should be ok if well packed. Just don't order them during a heat wave. Sitting in a very hot mail box or post office is what can kill them.

I have sent the 'seeds' around and it is all about how well they are packed. They can survive long enough to get to Uganda. I planted the seed from a big leaf line 10 years ago. This is what it looked like 2 hours ago.

Gorgeous tree Mike T.

I wouldn't chance with seeds if there are decent sized trees available for shipping to your area.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

No plants available here that I know of. Though I am hoping to hear from Soren... Ugandan nurseries are pretty basic.

I like the idea of trying Zanzibar though. Now I just need to convince the family we need to have a holiday there  ;D

John, the trick is to get them mailed to a friend out of Uganda, who can carry them here. I have seen parcels reaching the Ugandan post office (by tracking ID), but they are "lost" when I go to the post office to look for them. Getting-lost rate is around 33%....
