Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: wanted Grafted trees
« on: August 26, 2017, 07:02:27 PM »
You may want to give toptropicals.com a chance. Like most online nurseries, they have a mix of good and bad reputation. But, I’ve ordered from them several times in the past and have been reasonably satisfied. It may also be your only option to find some of the rare trees your looking for without driving.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Oliver Loquat Experience?
« on: April 28, 2017, 03:11:52 PM »
I have a little experience with the Oliver and Champagne loquat. Unfortunately, I lost the Oliver in a flood a while ago, but I thought it was excellent when I had it. You can see a couple of pictures of the Oliver I posted a while ago, the color was a dark orange, sweet, productive and  I thought the flavor was rich and apricot like. I was very happy with the Oliver tree and was sad when I lost it, the only downside I can think of was that the fruit wasn’t large. I got a Champagne loquat to replace the Oliver and haven’t been nearly impressed and have recently dug it up. The Champagne does fruit by itself but not heavily and the fruit has a lot more acidity then I like unless it’s absolutely dead ripe. Even though the fruit is very good when it’s dead ripe with a complex flavor, you have to wait until it becomes soft and wrinkled, at that point the fruit usually cracks and is quite small. I now have an Avril to replace the Champagne but haven’t tasted it yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seeking info on M-4 mango
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:01:42 PM »
Is the M-4 another Kent X Gary cross like the O-2? I wonder if it would be a good idea to plant one in a spot fairly close to my O-2, I’m not sure if the cross pollenating would result in a good tasting fruit or not.

It’s no problem. I should warn you that it’s not the best time to graft right now because most mango trees have flowered and are setting fruit now but I think my Sweet Tart may have a few branches that are pushing buds if you want to try. Don’t worry about price, if you just want a couple of branches you can have them for free. Actually, I also have a newly grafted Kathy mango tree that’s a new release and close relative of the Sweet tart that you can also have.

5
If nobody else has offered and you are willing to travel to Davie, I can give you some Sweet Tart budwood.

Looks like I’m not the only one interested in finding a little more information on the Son Pari mango, I recently ordered one off EBay that I believe came from Zills. Squam, I’m also interested to get your opinion of the mango.

Another new variety of Indian mango that I’ve been hearing amazing reports on its top tier status is the Sonpari mango that’s an Alphonso × Baneshan cross. Unfortunately, it seems like only a couple of people have tasted one. I am curious to see how it compares to other previous Indian mango favorites like Kesar.

Is the taste or strong resinous components similar to a Valcarrie or on the slightly milder side like a St. Maui.

I tasted a coc last year and it was fantastic.......even more so because it has not been mentioned as a top tiered mango

I think all the new Zill varieties have blinsed some to varieties suchs as Coc/Cac.  Dont get me wrong, many of the  ew Zill varieties are fantastic and extreme top tier but certain varieties suchs as Coc should be included in the top tier.  Another that opened my eyes was Son Pari, which for some reason is poorly k own in South Florida  (maybe due ro something such a production issue I am unaware of, who knows?).

Rob, can you give us a little more information about the flavor profile of the Son Pari. The only information I could find on it, was that it had a turpentine like flavor but the taste wasn’t as strong as something like the Bombay. It wasn’t a very positive description of a mango but I’m hoping that you have something better to say. Also, how would you compare it to the Guava mango which is another mango I’ve been thinking about that is supposed to have Indian flavors.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lara farms "grafted miami soursop"
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:58:36 PM »
How is the fruit from excaliber's seedling trees?

Its pretty good.  Its on the sweeter side with a balance of subacid.  Original tree had a low seed count, for a soursop.  I have never had a fibre free soursop so I wouldn't make that claim.  I would love to see the fruit of what people claim to have a fibre free soursop.

I would second that. I had my first runt fruit from my Excalibur a couple of months ago and think it showed a lot of promise. It was not a prime example of a Excalibur Soursop fruit but it was still sweet and there was a real nice complexity to the fruit that I hope develops further as the tree matures. My tree was grafted though and not one of their seedlings.

I harvested my first Excalibur Soursop from my grafted tree today and thought I would share a few pictures and a little bit of information about it. I’m happy to report that it does appear it be a low cotton/seed fruit. The taste was mostly the typical soursop flavor but every once in a while I would get a much sweeter complex flavor that I really loved. I’s a small tree right now and I'm hoping as it becomes more established that sweeter portion become more prevalent throughout, but even if the fruit stayed the same quality I’m very happy with it.

JF, I appreciate you posting more pictures of the ST Maui with a review. I’m glad to hear that it can still hold its own against some of the newer varieties and is worth growing.

Wow, that is by far the largest and best looking St Maui I’ve ever seen. I have a tree that I’ve still waiting to taste. Shame that it appears it couldn’t make anybody’s list of top five though.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Precocious Capuassu/Capuacu
« on: September 10, 2016, 08:54:13 PM »

This fruiting Capuassu tree was a seed sent to me just under 3 years ago.A friend grew it on a rapid development program and it is delivering. It was supposed to be an extra good one and because I received over 100 seeds from 4 sources I can't remember where it came from.It was either Richard,Paulo or Ricardo who are all champion at getting great American stuff and packing it well.Raul from Mexico is also a champ but this predates my dealings with Raul.Anyway thanks to all those people who have traded great seeds in the last 4 years and things are coming to fruition.

Congratulations on the beautiful fruit. Have you been able to make any judgements on whether they require a second tree for crosspollination to set fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Labor Day Mango Tasting

Fun! I've never really payed attention to either Edward or Cogshall, but i see 14 pages of posts on each. Edward seems to be more consistently praised than Cogshall.

That's a sweet tart not st. Maui. Confusing but ST generally means sweet tart on this forum

Thanks for the clarification. I think the color throw me off, I've never seen a Sweet Tart with that much red in it before.

Wow, they all look like their at their peak ripeness. I never seen a ST Maui with that much color in it. Do you remember anything about its taste?

Thanks again. I'll try something with Dylox and see if I have better luck.

I appreciate the advice everybody. i guess they are the Cuban May Beatles. I think I'm running out of options because the sprays only stop them for a few days then a new batch of beatles always takes their place. Cookie Monster, I've already tried a soil drench twice with imidacioprid that's suppose to control grubs and it didn't stop them from stripping the leafs. Maybe I would have better luck with something like a Ross sapote.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I give up on my Fiarchild #2 canistal?
« on: September 02, 2016, 01:32:57 AM »
I’ve had my canistal for almost two years and it wants to grow but is under almost constant attack from June beetles. The first year I would stray twice a week which only seemed to slow them down but they eventually stripped the tree of leaves. It’s remained mostly dormant but did manage to put out some new growth early in the year, it didn’t take very long before they showed up again. Since nothing else was working I decided to use a soil drench which did seem to thin the numbers out after a couple of weeks but they still managed to strip the leafs. Now it has gone through the process again of loosing all its leafs than going dormant for a little while, eventually putting out a set of new leafs. Now for a third time despite my best efforts the tree is stripped of its leafs again. I’m also starting to fear that the June beetles are going start moving onto my other trees. I would appreciate any advice or if anybody else has experienced the same thing I would love to hear about it.

I appreciate all the suggestions everybody. Coyote, would Page or Dekopon make your list of the top five.

Andrew, you can buy a Temple Orange from this Florida Nursery/grower.

https://www.briteleaf.com/product/temple-orange/

Millet

Looks like I'm out of luck again. Just checked it out and they are out of stock on the Temple.

P.S. Sorry for posting this in the wrong forum. I'm not used to posting in the citrus forum and didn't know that there was a buy and sell section.

Citrus General Discussion / Wanted: Shasta Gold
« on: August 15, 2016, 01:35:30 PM »
Does anybody know a source in South Florida for this one. I was originally looking for the Temple but have had a hard time finding that one too. Then I read about the Shasta Gold, which is suppose to be a newly developed mandarin that everybody has been raving about with Temple parentage. I'm not even sure it's available in South Florida yet. If anybody knows where to find one or when they are going to become available I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the reply RyanL. That was a great comparison between the Dekopan and Page that I was looking for. I thought they were going to be more similar in taste but I'm sure that I'll enjoy both trees.

I have been eating them for years.   Both California and Florida grown.  As with any fruit/citrus, the quality can vary based on location and climate however when at their best, they are most likely the best of the mandarins  (possibly including all oranges and tangerines ) commercially available.

Are you including the Page mandarin in that comparison. I read that when it's at its peak it's one of the sweetest and best tasting with a unique/complex flavors of all the mandarins. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on how the Page compares to the Dekopon.

Beautiful looking plants and fruit Andrew, what size pot do you have them in?

Simon

There in five gallon pots. I don't think the picture does the fruit justice, especially for its age it's producing a very nice sized pineapple.
