Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I give up on my Fiarchild #2 canistal?
« on: September 02, 2016, 01:32:57 AM »
I’ve had my canistal for almost two years and it wants to grow but is under almost constant attack from June beetles. The first year I would stray twice a week which only seemed to slow them down but they eventually stripped the tree of leaves. It’s remained mostly dormant but did manage to put out some new growth early in the year, it didn’t take very long before they showed up again. Since nothing else was working I decided to use a soil drench which did seem to thin the numbers out after a couple of weeks but they still managed to strip the leafs. Now it has gone through the process again of loosing all its leafs than going dormant for a little while, eventually putting out a set of new leafs. Now for a third time despite my best efforts the tree is stripped of its leafs again. I’m also starting to fear that the June beetles are going start moving onto my other trees. I would appreciate any advice or if anybody else has experienced the same thing I would love to hear about it.

Citrus General Discussion / Wanted: Shasta Gold
« on: August 15, 2016, 01:35:30 PM »
Does anybody know a source in South Florida for this one. I was originally looking for the Temple but have had a hard time finding that one too. Then I read about the Shasta Gold, which is suppose to be a newly developed mandarin that everybody has been raving about with Temple parentage. I'm not even sure it's available in South Florida yet. If anybody knows where to find one or when they are going to become available I would appreciate it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kaew Luem Rang: Mango
« on: March 23, 2016, 08:51:53 PM »
Does anyone have any information about this mango. I really like the color and shape of the fruit. Almost like an Mahachanok without the wide range of colors. I would appreciate if anybody could share their experiences with taste, size and bearing habits.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Whitman Soursop
« on: November 24, 2015, 10:41:22 AM »
I know it’s a long shot but thought I would give it a try. Would be willing to drive if it’s near the Davie area or pay whatever shipping. I’ve hear the reports of poor production but already have a productive Miami and Excalibur so I would really like to add this one to the collection. would also appreciate any leads or if anybody knows somebody who may have one in the future it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a two year old grafted tree that’s about twelve feet tall and very health. I think it came from Pine Island and it’s supposed to be a variety that can handle tropical environments better. When I put it in the ground it almost immediately starting producing fruit. I thought it was going to be a very productive tree. But, since then I have only gotten one single fruit. It produces a lot of flowers every year but they all seem to just fall off. I live in Davie Florida, I think that’s zone 10b and I’m afraid it’s not getting enough chill hours to produce. I was hoping somebody could share their experiences.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Sold
« on: May 17, 2015, 02:14:18 PM »
Sad to see it go but I think I need to find a new place for my Grumichama. Produces heavily twice a year with a taste that is every bit as good as other members of the Myrtaceae family including a good Jabuticaba. Nice and healthy, being six feet tall at the highest you shouldn't have any problems transplanting it.

P.S. I can provide the shovel and dig it out but I won't do shipping.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is wrong with my new mango tree.
« on: April 08, 2015, 12:33:32 PM »
I bought this tree last week and it was nice and healthy with nothing wrong. I didn't have a chance to plant it until yesterday when I noticed how bad it had gotten. I gave it plenty of water. The only thing I can think of that I may of did wrong was placing it in a place that was too shady. Would lack of sun cause this kind of damage? Just wanted to double check with the experts to make sure that it is not anything more I need to worry about.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Oliver Loquat
« on: March 12, 2015, 07:07:03 PM »
I wanted to share with the forum my first home grown loquats. I’ve tasted a few other varieties from different sources but this is my first time I have tasted a fully ripe loquat( atleast I think they are fully ripe). I think ripeness made a big difference on taste. The other varieties I tasted were definitely more on the yellow side and had a strong acidic taste with a mild flavor.  But since I have not tasted them when they were fully ripe I don’t think It would be fair to do a comparison. Anyways, I would classify the Oliver as an excellent fruit. The taste reminded be a lot of a rich, extra sweet apricot with a bit of its own unique flavor. And when It was fully ripe like in the picture I don’t think it had any more acid then a ripe apricot. Only negative so far is that I wish they were larger. This is the season for loquats. If anybody else has anything to share about the Oliver or any other must try loquats feel free to post.

Toptropical is claiming to sell a superior variety of Sugar Apple simple called Vietnam variety. I'm also starting to see this variety show up at local nurseries. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this variety and if it lives to the hype. It is suppose to have a firmer texture and lighter color making me think it's possible another name for the Na-Dai. Here's a picture off their site, It doesn't look like any Na-Dai I've seen and looks more like a really good Phet Pakchong.

This is my first year getting any Annona and I know they are still quite small but the shape is really throwing me off. Firstly the Lisa is different then the others I’ve seen online. It appears to have a brown blush to the to the skin instead of red like I was expecting and the nobs appear quite armor like.

Here is the Thai Lessard, I’ve had many of these at the farmers market and they are probably one of my favorite fruits out there. But I remember the nobs being very smooth but both of mine appear like they are developing more of a pebbly texture everyday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Excalibur and Lara Farms grafted soursop
« on: April 22, 2014, 06:48:21 PM »
Can anyone who has tried either one please share your experiences. There is very little information online, I have heard some of the grafted trees have lower seed count and fiber but how does the taste compare to seedling. These are the two varieties I'm most excited about, anyone with knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
