Mango season was very sparse for our family this year. Of the ones we got from our trees, the Edward and Maha Chanoks were outstanding. Two of the finest I have ever eaten. I also had some Florigons, some Kents, some Mallikas (superb when perfectly ripe), and 1 Sweet Tart (the first one a smallish tree has ever produced). The ST was lackluster, but this is likely due to it being the first fruit.

Anything is possible but what you are describing just sounds odd, especially with more than just 1 fruit.  Compost should not have any effect on this.  A picture would tell the story.  Its very easy to post a picture.

Here are some pictures of my last Bombay. It was one of the smaller ones on the tree. Weighed in at 1 lb 9.2oz. ;D[][/img]

It was a little over-ripe and soft in some areas, but was still very delicious! ;D

Hello Folks,

Has any one tasted Vietnam's top notch Mango variety - Hoa Loc?? And how does it compare with the good Mango varieties like Maha Chanok??

I have tasted Hoa Loc grown in Florida and i feel Mahachanok is a superior fruit.  For Vietnamese mangoes, I much prefer tye Coc.

How was the Florigon ?
I ask because i have one, about 4ft tall and bushy.
its actually from seed though. (i dont remember if that is a poly seed ?)
Anyway, since im in New Orleans, border of 9a/9b, i am really pushing it
and didnt want to spend a fortune on a grafted tree and shipping
(you cant buy a mango tree here), and thought maybe a seedling tree might be hardier anyway.

It doesnt have to be in the top 5 tastes of all time
if it survives the winter and fruits
i will be happy if it tastes like a Tommy.

Greenman, how old is your seedling? Did it reach 4 feet in its first year or has it already survived through at least one Winter?

The best tasting mango of 2015? That's tough, but I found one that's sweet, full of flavor, and doesn't give me contact dermatitis.  8)  :P The Fanta mango.

Yes, Florigon is polyembryonic. That doesn't guarantee that it will come true from seed though

My favorites for this year:

Gary

Amy

Edgar

Guava

Fruit Punch

Pineapple Pleasure

Didn't live up to the hype for me:

Coconut Cream

Sweet Tart.  I have tried this bad boy at various degrees of ripeness and I just can't catch it at a good spot

Lemon Zest (This year it just wasn't doing it for me.  Last year it was in my top 3)

No sooner did I make the post above than I ate a sweet tart at its perfect stage.  It still doesn't crack my top 5 this year but it is well within my top 10.

3. Bombay - Huge delicious tangy/sweet mango, very tasty.

Could you please define "huge?"

You beat me to it and took the words right out of my mouth.

Ok, so I did not weigh the mangos that came from my tree... But larger than your average haden or kent and smaller than the larger Keitt mangos. If I had to guess, they were close to two pounds. There was enough flesh that I had trouble eating the entire mango in one sitting. And I like eating at least one or two "average" size mangos per day. One reason I think they may have been larger than usual is I had a lot of fruit drop when only golf ball size. I had some natural thinning of fruit. My 10' tall by 10' wide tree gave me only ten mangos of about 30 or so that set. Hence, bigger, tastier fruit. I was surprised at how good the flavor was, and the large size(with huge, fat shoulders and a very sunken stem) It was great! IMHO.

Well, the scale doesn't lie......unless your finger is somehow hidden behind he fruit making the fruit weigh more  ;).  Your fruits would be double the size of mine.  Whatever you are doing.......keep it up.

I have eaten a lot of mango this summer.  A lot of them were really good.

I saw these two weren't mentioned so I'm throwing them out there...

Jakarta: super good this year.  A big mid-season fruit.  Taste is really complex.

Tebow (Young):  Ate my first tebow a couple days ago. First time tasting this variety. It is super good in my opinion.  Tangy sweet.

Also, saw florigon mentioned above. I have a small tree and it produced a lot of fruit this year. It is early and taste great.  Worth growing.

Our early Florigons were washed out. The later ones were quite good, sweet with a citrus-hint.

Hello, I'm new to he forum!
I wanted to talk about the new experimental mango, the (M4)
Perhaps the best tasting mango I've eaten!
Just planted a Coconut Cream (15 gal) a Lemon Zest (15 gal) and a (3 gal) Providence.
I've got room for one more and it'll either be a guava mango, or an M4 (if available next year)!
I've had some very informative conversations with Walter Zill, what a great guy!

I agree the M-4 was very good, and similar to but not quite as good as the E -4.  Neither of these varieties will be released next year and I have to question if they ever will be.  But who knows, Gary and Marlys could surprise us.

If you are looking forca possible new release to plant that may be on the horizon,  watch for either/both the Cotton Candy and Fenix /Phoenix.

Where do you havr your trees planted?
