Title: side-side comparison of Mahachanok mango from topt. vs planto
Post by: knlim000 on May 29, 2018, 02:05:42 AM
pick these two today for side-side comparison of Mahachanok mango from topt. vs plant.
The yellow longer one is from topt.  The one that split os from plantog, been told by Sqam that it does't look like Mahachanok.

Thats very disappointing. I could see some similarities with the longer one to Maha but I never had a Maha with a valley down the middle. Mabye budwood was sourced from a Maha seedling (monoembryonic). How did they taste?

sounds like both are a quack.

I ate the smaller green one , it was crunchy , not too sour. not sweet either, fiberless.  I had one previously from same tree, that was a bit on the yellow tip, it has a bit of floral taste to it.

The longer yellow one, I'm waiting for it to turn more yellow.

I would wait until you get a second fruit off of both trees. If they look the same I would contact both sellers and ask for a replacement. Top Tropical sent me a wrong mango tree and replaced it when I sent them photos of the fruit. This is clearly the fault of both nurseries. We pay too much for mango trees in SoCal to get misidentified trees.

Thanks Bill.   I was really looking forward to try the Mahachanok for the last 2-3yrs.   I feel a bit better now.  I'll take your advice and give it another year to see if they both will reveals itself as the real Mahachanok before contacting the vendors. The tree from planogram was not cheap.

I’ve mentioned this before but the shape of Mangos grown in SoCal can vary significantly from those grown in Florida. Some factor that I can’t pinpoint, perhaps the colder weather or some fungus affects the pollination of our Mangos, especially the early Mangos that develop in colder weather. The incomplete pollination is enough to initiate Mango Fruit formation but the Fruit will not have a viable embryo. These “nubbin” fruit are often much shorter and rounded and wide or you can say very fat looking almost like an elongated golfball.

A tree that produces these nubbin fruit can still produce normally shaped fruit and I’ve seen several stages of incomplete pollination. Sometimes the seed husk will have nothing in it at all and other times it will have a super super tiny embryo that I don’t believe is viable.

On my Maha Chanok tree, I’ve post pictures of two different shaped fruit coming from the same tree. I actually get three different shapes but the super early nubbins that tend to set fruit in Winter usually get cracks in them and are curved and don’t make it to maturity.

The second type of fruit is kinda straight and elongated but lacks the curve of a typical Maha Chanok. These fruit have normal beautiful coloration of a regular MC and these fruit can have viable or non viable embryos.

The fruit that tends to set later when temperatures warm up or perhaps when we are out of rainy season sets larger fruit that is more typical sigmoid shape of a Florida grown MC. I’ve posted pictures of the two different shape MC somewhere on this forum but I forgot where.

I’m not saying that your two trees are the real Maha Chanok but simply giving you a bit more info. I’ll take a look at my tree to see if it set any fruit this year and what shape they are.

Here’s a picture of MCs from Leo Manuel’s yard. I believe these are his early Fruit. These are the type that don’t have the sigmoid shape that I described earlier.

Leo also gets longer more sigmoid shaped MCs from the same tree. He also gets some fruit that are usually shorter and are almost straight from the same tree.

Leo has 2-3 MCs which he acquired from different sources.

thanks Simon for the insights.  Fruits on it flowered last november. fruits are are about 4inches now. I do have flowers blooming now on both toptr and plantogra tress.  The planogram tree fruits sounded like what you describe. Maybe the one from planogram is real mahac.  When I cut up the ripen planogram maha, it has a flower taste to it.  i really like the taste of the one from planogram.

I ate the one from toptr. i didn't like it, it was a bit fibrous and the taste was complete off from the one from planogram.  it has a weir taste that I don't like.

So far, i prefer the one from planogram.  Both of the trees are blooming again , the are both in the greenhouse.

Do you have pictures of both trees' leaves? I'd be interested in seeing them. Maha has very distinct leaves.

It's easiest to have plants show up at your door without doing anything.
You can order tree's at 3 in the morning if you want ( the best time to make a decision)
Wait, I just click this button and it shows up at my door!? Awesome!
Fancy descriptions and pictures. you can practically taste that deliciousness you'll be growing

Ive never bought from TT or any big online plant re-seller. I enjoy going through the whole process of growing, and avoiding snake oil Bozo's.

Why do people keep buying things from Top Tropical , The man is a thief.

That’s the same as the late season Mahas we get here. From the same tree that produces the straight fruit and the short fat rounded nubbins. We get a lot of short fat rounded nubbins which contain atrophied seeds from the various mango varieties we grow here. I’ve seen them in Glenn, Lemon Zest, Manilla and several other varieties.

Thanks for posting pics. Nice looking green house btw :).  Neither tree leaves looking like Maha. I have some Maha seedlings with leaves similar to the ones for the TopTropical tree. Thats a really bummer though. To pay so much for those tress and its not what it claimed to be. I bought a "Heidi" and "Mesk" (reluctantly) from TopTropicals early this year cause I could not find them anywhere else. Who knows what they'll be in 3-4 years (I would) :(.

Yeah. My single maha hasn't produced much fruit but it looks pretty much exactly like his 1st and 2nd pic in the latest post. But you are right about the leaves. They seem a little short and spadelike with frilled edges. My maha has long leaves with straight edges. Nutrition deficiency?

Both those have the typical sigmoid shape to my eyes. Please post pictures when they ripen. The Maha has a beautiful coloration when ripe. Sometimes they fully color up after you harvest them but they will usually have at least a slight blush.

simon,
is this the blush you talking about?

(https://s8.postimg.cc/wekxxhxa9/IMG_1669.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/wekxxhxa9/)

This one splitted, I think it's because of me watering in consistently , I usually give it daily 1gal, but sometimes, I get give it 2ga.  There is zero seeds inside as you can see. And I think I have not encountered any seeds so far.  Will see if the larger size fruit will have any seeds inside.

That’s the beginning of the blush but the fruit is not ripe yet. It will lose more of it’s green and will have more red and pink like the picture in my avatar.

The pic of leaves of both trees on post #21 look like my MC, and the recent fruit pic proves they are MC. I agreed with Simon that sometime the fruits look total different depending on climate. Redwood city for redwood and not mangoes :)

simon-
is this the color you referring to? this fruit was aborted by the tree while it was green and i let it ripen. It tastes pretty good with floral scent to it.

Kinda. It’s pink with some red and the green ripens to a yellow color. It’s a really beautiful color. I’ll take pictures when Leo’s Fruit ripens, my tree didn’t hold Fruit this year.

jbaqai,
it's a glass greenhouse about a the size of a room.it is pretty heavy, about 2000lb. i was feed up with plastics and polycarbon doesn't look that nice.
In the winter, i heat it up with a few candles since I don't have any other heating source.
