here are a few of my picks and descriptions...what are some of yours??
worst:
jujube (bad breath, rotting teeth)
white sapote
sapodilla
guanabana (bleached laundry)
best:
Canistel (caramel)
miracle fruit (coconut jasmine, one of the very best!)
jaboticaba (sweet cantaloupe smell)
citrus
annonas (wet paint? cookie dough? I love it)
rollinia emarginata (super sweet, strong smell! maybe my favorite!)

My favorite are citrus flowers, because they not only smell great but also pervade the air...you don't have to be close by to smell them. Another very nice smelling flower, but you have to put your nose close to them to smell them, are tree tomato (tamarillo) flowers. Cannonball tree flowers also smell amazingly good. Funny because their fruits are so stinky. Java almond, Sterculia foetida, has bad smelling flowers, as the species name suggests.

I like the smell of the Cherimoya (it smells just like it tastes), citrus, and coffee.
The one I don't like is the Pitaya flower.

Ditto Marklee, I love hand pollinating Cherimoya's the smell is spell binding, have to think on the worst one ??? 8)

I agree miracle fruit have a wonderful fragrance; when I get a few hundred flowers open at once the scent fills my entire plant room. Citrus are always another favorite.
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) isn't really a tropical but is high on my worst-smelling list. I'll still keep mine though, unlike the few Stapelia I've ever grown-- beautiful flowers, but the stench was too much for me to tolerate.

Rollinia is my favourite. It fills the air with a heavenly purfume, especially in the humid late summer evenings. I have one planted fairly close to my bedroom window so I can appreciate the smell, which also reminds me to get out there and collect some pollen.
A few species smell like stale, wet towels when right up close, but they rarely seem to transmit the smell over any real distance. Nothing like a few amorphopallus I've grown :-\

big fan of citrus, lemon especially, and papaya.

The machete ice cream bean, Inga spectabilis, also has a wonderful smell that wafts in the air and attracts a lot of bees.

There are many bad smelling flowers and fungi which attract flies and carrion beetles. Of the stinkhorn fungi the bridal veil can really raise the roof. Some lilies are rancid with carrion odours especially night flowering types. Some melaleuca and terminalias have offensive and lingering dog mat stenches.
Durian has an alluring bouquet that wafts over great distances. Guavas, kuini and chempadek have bright fruity fragrances. I wouldn't know where to start with nice flowers.

The subject heading is "fruit tree flowers", not fungi, cacti, lillies, melaleucas, or even smelly fruits. Aren't you strrrretching it a bit?

I like this thread, I did not know the Miracle Fruit flowers smelled at all, such tiny flowers. Mine goes into profuse bloom and I confess to never giving it the sniff test, I'll have to do that.
I second/third/fourth the Citrus flower smell, some varieties more than others - Naval orange, in my experience, seems the most pervasive and clinging.
Night blooming jasmine takes the cake for me just for its intensity and sweetness and also childhood memories.

I also didn't know that the miracle fruit flowers smelled good! I have to check them out, as well. And I have to agree that the night-blooming jessamine is the best scented flower in the garden. If only they would bloom more often than 5-6 times a year for me.
Jujube is nasty smelling.
Can't wait for my inga edulis to start flowering, supposed to be a decent smell. Coffee flower blooms are nice, as well. Best fruit tree for me, though, has to be the citrus trees, I have a navel orange which has a wonderful scent.

Wait till you have a Mexican Garcinia in full flower ... can smell it from far away....like somebody dropped a bottle of perfume .

I think the imbe (G. livingstoneii) flowers also have very strong and nice smell. The bees really like them.

I haven't really noticed any aroma from my Miracle fruit, at least not from a distance.
As for Jujube, I do not find it foul smelling at all, my plant smells a bit like citrus. some cultivar imported from Taiwan, but suspect it a Z. mauritiana.
My favorite though has to be citrus, I just love the smell, growing up in central Florida, I guess its tied to childhood memories.
I agree the cannonball tree flowers, smelled nice, plus they are pretty also.

The aroma of the Cherimoya and Atemoya flowers is amazing. I can't believe such a small flower can put out such an intense scent.

almost forgot...pitangatuba flowers smell wonderful...they remind me of an acacia's fragrance.

I think both loquat and jackfruit have great fragrances.

I love the smell of hand pollenating all annonas because you know the fruit is on the way.

For me the best smelling flowers; Cherimoya, Passions, Lemon guava, and citrus.
Don't have any ''worst'' smelling fruit trees...if you want a stinky flower...go for Stapelia or Orbea ;)

I like jakfruit and annona flowers, but for sheer olfactory pleasure, its citrus by a landslide.

I think the only essential oil made from a fruit tree flower is neroli, which is made from sour orange flowers. Neroli is really a heavenly scent and truly captures the wonderful scent of citrus flowers, but it is very expensive!

This thread is a great read! I've got four Miracle Fruit but they aren't blooming yet, so I'm excited to know they're fragrant. I love having a multi-purpose plant. Same goes for Canistel - Excited for that one, didn't know its blossoms were fragrant and delicious in scent.
I've got little experience so far in tropical fruit flowers but I will say, I find it neat the variety in citrus. My Limequat and Kaffir Lime blossoms have absolutely no scent (should they?) yet my lemons smell sort of like bulb or apple blossoms. (bulb as in bluebells, hyacinth, etc) My Trovita orange has yet to blossom but I'm excited to get to know the smell. My mom grew up in California so she's well aware of orange-blossom scent, but I haven't a clue yet Mock-Orange is a native plant nearby.

sete capotes (similar to roses)
eugenia repanda (I like it more than e. uniflora and e. pyriformis)
worst:
pear (dog food)

Surprised. Nobody seemed to mention Mango flowers smell good. Papaya is fragrant too.

Worst? Thai Giant Jujube, hands down!
When flowering, my jujube smells exactly what I imagine a sock hamper in an NBA locker room would smell like after all those overpaid heroes had showered and gone home.
Be that as it may, the wasps (and I don't mean White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants) seem to love it, judging from the wasps of every size, color, and shape imaginable that swarm that tree all day when it's in bloom.
Honeybees stay away, but wasps love it. Too bad they don't pollinate worth a damn.

I enjoy the smell of my papaya flowers: reminds me of floral smell combined with lime.
Jujube flowers have an odd unappealing smell.

Awesome thread! Flower Smell is such an underrated aspect of fruit trees.
Star ruby grapefruit is an absolutely incredible smell and permeates the whole greenhouse Naartjie is pretty nice too. I don't really like the smell of mango flowers. If you count rosehips as a fruit(I love rosehip syrup) everyone knows they can smell amazing.
Though not the same kind of sweet bloom smell I love the strong scented leaves like tree tomato, white sapote and some Annonas have a strong smell I find pleasant too

Was it really the flower fragrance that gave you the headache, or could it be pesticides they just sprayed on those plants?

could be. same thing happens when i drive up 27 near okeechobee in winter/spring. But, again, could be the pesticides.

Big rotting flesh flowers like Rafflesia, Corypha palm, titan lily and even the south African star flower are smelly. Some melaluecas are terrible and a few rainforest trees around here have putrid flowers. Red stinkhorn, yellow stinkhorn and bridal veil stinkhorn fungi come up in my garden sometimes and they are really offensive.
Some of the citrus relatives with masses of white flowers are very fragrant.
