Simon

Your mangos look great! They are not anemic they look very happy and healthy. You are going to have a nice crop this year maybe you can share in our mango tasting in San Diego late summer.

As promised I took some pictures of a TRUE everbearing mango.....as you can see dripping with mangos and flowering like crazy!!

Those are really nice mango trees Simon!
Do you have close-up shots of the grafts on the cocktail tree?

Love the photos!!! So many Mangoes on that Tree!!! I could give Mangoes to everyone on my Cul De Sac .I can't wait till I purchase my trees This Spring.. Seels like they will grow a lot better here in Hot Temecula compared to 70-80 degree year round San Diego... Just fearing the winters we get. Hopefully the 7 gallon trees i buy will start blooming withing a year or 2.

Zip 92592?  Temecula?  Clay - it looks to me like you are zone 8b,
or did you know that already?!?!!?

Very cold susceptible where you are, it seems to me, or maybe you
knew that....or maybe you are going to keep them in pots.....the heat
they don't mind at all....but that cold......be careful. very careful..... :-\

Hey JF - I'm back from Israel and will soon post a sloppy video of me
and Moshe Weiss touring a subtropical fruit place called Carmel Orchards....

Mango Fang,

I'm actually in zip 92563..Not sure if my info is posted wrong in here... I'm literally on the Murrieta/ Temecula city line.

After browsing Temecula/ Murrieta  Weather records, It seems as if we get weather dropping down to 32 or a tad bit below for only a couple hours a  few days out of the winter season. However it appears we get the 15-20 year Cold snap happening every decade or so. Alltime record low happened in JAN 2007 hitting 22 degrees.

If weather drops to 22... Highly doubt my trees would survive...maybe with 4 space heaters in each tree wrapped with a 400 sqft freeze cloth....Highly unrealistic. but if i can grow these trees for 8-15 years enjoying the fine Mangos you Floridans tease us with....It would be well worth it.

Welcome back just in time for the grafting seminar next Thursday. Gary if you have the time come on over and check out the everbearing monster and after we can go pick some Mediterranean food with Ashok and go to the seminar.

Btw, I'll have some budwood from this monster if it ever stops flowering

Warren

I'll take some close ups of the grafts when I get home. I really like using Manilla as a rootstock. Most my grafts on this tree was done during the fall when temps were very cool and I was surprised that many of the grafts took.

Here are some close up shots of some of the grafts. I had to take the pictures at awkward angles because the sun was whitewashing the pictures.

This is one of the older cleft grafts done around late spring or early summer, it is an Edward Seedling from Eunice Messners Edward mango that she brought to Leo's house for tasting. Eunice recommended that I plant the seed because she felt that some seedling mangoes produce pretty decent fruit. I also grafted this seedling onto my slightly more mature Manilla mango that flowered last year in order to see if the rootstock can influence the grafted variety to bloom earlier than it normally would. The Manilla rootstock is not flowering yet so I may have to wait till next year to see if there is any influence.

This is the vegetative flush from the graft shown above. Edward seedling.

Here are two failed grafts and one that took, this is a green Thai mango, scions donated from a member of this forum.

This is a Maha Chanok with the buds ready to break, it has been in suspended animation for about two months and buds are finally growing

This is the same Maha scion but showing the buds about to break, it was grafted approx late oct.

This is a NDM graft that's been suspended for about 2-3 months, the buds are just starting to swell.

This is another one that has not pushed yet and like the others, it's been holding for a while and it's just starting to swell. Scion was donated from a forum member, I have to look at my notes to find out the variety.

I also have Carrie, Grafted Edward, Mallika and a Spirit of 76 that is overwintering in the garage. I will probably remove all fruit from all mango trees for another 1-3 years so that I can get my trees to size up. I believe it takes several years for mango trees in SoCal to acclimate and get settled in because of our relatively cooler winters and I eventually want a lot of fruit from my trees so I hope a little patience on my part will reward me with mangoes to share in future mango tastings.

Great job Simon!

I have a couple of multi-grated mango trees and I will top work my Ataulfo this summer with maybe 6 or 7 varieties.

I plan to donate most of my mango trees and only keep 5 multi grafted trees in a few years.

Thanks JF! It's great to add multiple varieties to a tree in case something happens to one tree , you can have a backup. My NDM isn't doing too good, it's flowering again so I'm hoping the NDM grafted onto Manilla rootstock will grow better.

JF,

After seeing that 25 ft Behemoth Monster of yours 9 poor neighbor next door lol), I might to need scale my top 5 list to 4...maybe even 3....depending on how vigorous the LZ and CoCo cream are.

JF I'm sure you have a Consistent supply of mangos for the season with that beast....definitely seems like your neighbor has half of the share as well. lol

Simon,
So you have  a few cocktail trees growing? I might need to really look into this once the trees I buy at Top Tropicals gets established.

So if start grafting some of these Florida and Indian Varieties to say a Manilla rootstalk. 1) it may grow a little better and tolerate the weather a bit more for my region? 2) I can have a nice 20 ft Monster like JF's one day with a Mango connoisseur's dream tree of LZ, Sweet Tart, Coco Cream....all on one tree?

Sorry for the Noob questions guys....But rain or shine..my case...Frost.....I will taste a  LZ from my own backyard if its the last thing I do.

Clay, your safest bet is to grow an Ataulfo seedling from Maddock Nursery for three or four year and top work it. You can always buy scions of your favorite Florida varieties. I would suggest you attend the mango festival in Miami in July and try all the varieties you think you like before going crazy.

Here is a pics of my 10' Ataulfo (3.5 years old) that flowered in it's first year on the ground.....look for my old threads in GW forum. This is what Eunice did to her Piņa mangos which were trash, she top work them after 8 years and made monster Edward, carnival and Thomson. Btw, my Ataulfo has Been prune every year.

Nice bloom Jeff! This may be our earliest mango season in awhile. I even have my 1.5 year old seedling from Cuba trying to flower. I can wait to try this Hatcher-like Cuban fruit.

JF, I would love to come down to your Mango Festivals and try all of Zills creations and top vareietys.. I even have family in the Daytona Beach area....small town called Deland.

However I just bought a house, and funds are definately stretched thin lol pLus I will most  likely be deployed in the Navy for next Humanaitarian tour we do in Spring that will be about 6 months long...I got my fingers crossed that we dont go...But if Duty calls...Duty calls...

For now I am trusting all of the top flavors based on pure Feedback from you Mango specialist....Picks seem to vary in some cases...However I keep seeing the same top selections mentioned more than the others.....So for now.... LZ, Sweet Tart, Coco Cream, Carrie, Malika     Nam Doc Mai and Maha Chanok are still duking it out with Malika...The forums have spoken lol But Damn JF it sure would be nice to taste some of these Mango Gods for my own opinion and selection.

I didn't taste a single variety before I planted my 15-20 trees, but i'm pretty
happy with how it all turned out.....

Gary,

I think at 20 trees, you have to strike gold sooner at later lol. I envy you!!!

Hopefully I'll have my own minature grove growing soon as well... Already have several mature trees growing solid here in backyard including 2 Red Barron Peach,  Saturn Peach,  Mexican Lime, Blood Orange, San Anna Plum, Pear (unknown), Anna Dorsett Apple, Cherry tree (unknown), and now for the last filler!!!! Mangos....First in Temecula with a LZ!?!?

Oh wow you and MangoFang are right around the Corner.

Thanks for your service by the way...I've been in 6 years now (E-5 Petty Officer).. 2 WestPacs, 3 RimPacks, a ton of underways and work ups. I haven't been deployed in almost  2 years so I might need to get my sea legs back lol.

I think my choices are pretty good, but then again this is based off pure feedback and not my own. I have some how convinced my Mother and law to host a few more varieties at her house that I cant fit in....It appears 5 trees just aint going to cut it lol
