Update Peach Cobbler, Maha, Pickering, Alano

Hi everyone, well it's been close to a year and wanted to give you guys an update on some of my trees. So about a year ago I dugout some of my trees (that I couldn't leave behind!)I had planted about 1 1/2 years before we moved unexpectedly . All my mangos were pugged when I bought them originally,  after seeing puglvr beautiful trees I wanted to give it a shot- I believe they will be much more manageable in the future. My alano sapodilla was pugged a year ago , I left it with no branches or leaves. None of my trees have fruited yet 😔, I'm sure it's because of all the moving around but anyways here are some pics. We are currently renting that's why I still have them in 25gal pots. We plan on renting for 1 more year before buying again. Not sure if to upsize to 45 gal or just keep them in there 1 more year. Don't pot them up unless they have a well developed root system, not root bound but can hold the shape of the pot fairly well if you pulled them out. I was told to use FAFARD commercial mix if I was going to leave them in a pot indefinitely.

Thanks for the comments guys! I really do enjoy watching these babies grow. Yea I think they still have some room to grow in the current containers- hopefully I can get 1 more year in them.  As for the soil - I used an organic soil sold by my local nursery ( drains really well) and mixed in azomite.

Yes the Alano has been pushing lots of new growth - the mangos have as well - but I've been pruning and shaping  them pretty heavily to get them to bush out and have an open center canopy at the same time.

 I have a alano in a squat 15 gallon that has a trunk about as large as yours. After seeing your pic I see the need to pug it to cause it to become more bushy. Does yours hold any fruit yet ? Mine flowers off and on all year but hasn’t held anything yet. I suspect that the tree is still too young. How old is your tree ?

Hi William, I bought the tree about 1 1/2 years ago and I would estimate the tree was probably 2 years old when I bought it. So figure 3 1/2 - 4 yrs. No flowers or fruits since I've had it - all the moving around and pugging hasn't helped - hopefully next year.

 Yes i'm thinking that the tree must need to reach a certain size / age before being able to hold fruit ? I tried once to hand pollinate a few of the flowers but still nothing. I guess at this point I just need more patience. I used osmocote plus as a fertilizer on it with good results but I may add a second type with a higher phosphorus amount to stimulate more flowering next spring. Also have a couple of Tikal and a Silas Woods as well.

Hope everyone is enjoying the mango season!  Just wanted to post some updated pics of some of my favorite trees! My Pickering gave me 2 delicious fruits this year for the first time, very delicious mango with a tropical coconutty twist to! Nothing yet from the Maha, Peach Cobbler . The Alano has been pumping out flowers for 3-4 months but hasn’t set fruit either. All are in 45gal except for Maha 25gal

Thanks for the compliments! it took me about  3 years after I initially “pugged” them to get them to look like this. I’ll list what dirt and fert I’ve been using tomorrow.

Beautiful trees and a heads up - when you finally get them in the ground inspect the root system carefully before hand.  Any girdling, J rooting or spin out needs to be corrected.  I lost a Pickering to girdling and just found out why my avocado seedling and graft failed -  J-Root.

Thanks for the heads up Mark, that was the main reason I just switched from 25 gal to 45 gal this week. I was surprised that there was hardly any roots exposed at all .

May I know where do you get supply for 45 gallon pot? It's very hard to find online, and they're super expensive. Thanks!

Kellogg potting soil, osmocote 14-14-14 , azomite( mixed it in when i transferred them from 15gal to 25gal) , liquid seaweed about once a month, water every other day. The 45 gal containers I got from my local nursery , owner gifted to me.

Rootmaker pots will ward off the spin out.  Those that failed were in conventional pots.  Best pots are those coated with a special copper hydroxide paint, DYI.
