This has been discussed at length. Durian has never been successfully fruited in south Florida a few people have tried but no one has succeeded. You only might be able to find frozen, but the quality is inferior. Search the forum

Fresh durian is very rare to find in South Florida. You'd probably have better luck trying the frozen fruit as davdigarcia suggested.

Sorry for the Stupid  question.
Does anyone grow mangosteen in South Florida successfully?

I believe it has been done before by Bill Whitman, Adolf Grimal, Fairchild Gardens (in the Whitman Pavilion) and I saw a tree that was fruiting size many years ago at a home along the water in Lighthouse Point, FL, north of Fort Lauderdale.  While I did not see fruit, my understanding was that the tree had fruited.  Anyone know of anyone else having success in South Florida with mangosteen?  Maybe someone over on Pine Island on Florida's southwest coast? The success stories are few and far between.

I think lots of people can grow mangosteen in Florida, at least for some time, until an arctic freeze or hurricane passes by. But getting mangosteen to fruit in Florida is a different matter. It's really not suited to their climate or to their soils. Mangosteen, like breadfruit, does not like big variations in temperature from daytime high to nightime lows. Also very high pH (calcerous) soils are not suitable for mangosteen.

From everything I've heard, the real kicker for mangosteens in So Fla. is the soil pH.  So unless you live over a backfilled quarry or have a dynamite hobby, gonna be tough.
They are not supposed to be salt tolerant but I think there is one fruiting on Miami Beach, sooooo..... Therefore.... I can get one to fruit in pots in Houston.

I have heard of a Fruiting mangosteen near me in the redlands. Belongs to some crazy, secretive, hippyish, colombian or cuban (i forget) guy who is super into organic and  farming.

I haven't had a chance to verify it is a mangosteen and not some other type of Garcinia, My mother is his friend and has seen the tree, but she can't tell and ficus from a longan.

I'm hoping to join this exclusive club. I already have the tree and the spot picked out. Now I just have to rent the back how and buy the soil.

Since it's going to be frozen durian, check out a few of the posts on the forum that have suggestions on the best ways to eat frozen durian. I think one member suggested blending it with ice cream.
