Hiryu Flying Dragon
« on: December 02, 2019, 12:48:08 AM »
Does anyone have experience with this Hiryu FD ?
It is suppose to be very similar to the Flying Dragon, but the fruit looks a little different and the branches are not as curved.
I grafted some to my FD and wanted to know if there was anything useful with using this one as a rootstock.

I am amazed how many seeds are in all four accessions of UCR  FD and how spread they are.
Mine  is more tall than wide and has no more than 4-5 seeds per fruit.
Best regards,

4-5 is very a low seed count. All of my poncirus both standard & FD will have 30+ seed in each fruit.

Low, low seed count. I AVERAGE 30 seeds per fruit on Standard Poncirus and 25 on FD. I have not seen that low of a count. Could it be environment or nutrition dictating low seed count?

The regular PT is giving more than 30 seeds per fruit and the flowering time is more or less the same, so it could be some varietal difference.

Also my Poncirus FD contains more than 30 seeds per fruit - by the way, th size of the fruits is smaller than those of a standard PT

Thank you all for the additional information on this variety.
My FD had many fruits this year, but each fruit only had 5-10 seeds, and most were not fully formed. Previous years it had 10-25 seeds in each fruit, nice and plump seeds.
