Visiting Austin TX! Where are the fruit?
« on: June 08, 2014, 11:58:24 AM »
Greetings all!  Noting I have already connected with Edzone9 I am shouting out to tropical fruit growers in the Austin area in that I will be speaking at a conference there next week hence am looking to get access to whatever tropical fruits - be they local or imported - while I am there.  So if you have suggestions...please fire away.  If there are specific things (seeds) from Bermuda that I can bring - not much happening now I must say - I am open to it.  Thanks in advance!

I don't know about fruit, but do you like barbeque?  Austin area is famous for the best barbeque in the world!

ED,

If you don't mind my asking, how much protection do your jabos and cambucas get? Do you think they'd stand a chance overwintering outside?

Check out the Asian and Hispanic supermarkets around Austin for tropical fruits.

I keep them in a small greenhouse thru the winter. I kept the temp above 44F. This plant material is to hard to find here in Central Texas so until I get some extra plants I am not testing their cold hardiness.

I don't know where to find them, but right now blueberries are in (picked 22 lbs this weekend) and peaches are right on the leading edge and should be making an appearance at anytime.

Not exactly exotic fruits but I would keep an eye out for these at a minimum.

You're what?  This is a family venue Ed, let's keep it clean.   ;D

Franklin's has quite the reputation.  Patience is key as the lines are long.

Thank you JC, DL, ES and MiT.  I am on the hunt for Asian supermarkets too now.  The ones on California last year were great so let's see...

I see so Texas likes sugarcane coke from Mexico, never heard of that before.

That bbq plate looks awesome, can't buy that in Europe. :-[

The Mexican coke comes in the recyclable glass bottles, there is also a nostalgia for that.
