Weird germination pattern in Annona spraguei
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:14:24 AM »
ANNONA SPRAGUEI planted in cells are germinating very poorly (no more than 20 of 200), but the ones I planted together (200 seeds in a small pot) got 90% germination.  Both  planted with the same planting mix and in the same shade house.

Any explanation??

Cheers

Carlos

Explanation var.1: 200 seeds in small pot provided themselves with good drainage and oxygen access.
Var.2: Decaying remnants of pulp 200 seds provided a high concentration of ethylene promotes ripening and germination.

Not certain of the reason behind gregarious germination, but I have seen this phenomenon many times with many species. Now I always bulk sow seeds, and dibble them into individual cells or pots after the first pair of true leaves  have hardened.

Many thanks but I dont believe any our your 2 options are the explanation:

1) All seeds were sow in top quality soil  mix, made by Canadian peat moss and vermiculite
2) All seeds were completely cleaned at the sowing time!!!

Yes, I also noticed this before,  but never was so clear like this time were I planted at the same time large quantities of seeds in the 2 ways. so I can compare results at the same time!

Still very curious

Yeah they look much healthier too, I only got one germination for spraguei and it only has 2 sets of leaves and it has a very thin stem while my hayesii's are growing out. I also used a similar mix, but with perlite. And Carlos, do you know by any chance the cold tolerance of these annonas? I have kept them in the greenhouse so far.

Perhaps the community planting was buried less deeply?

I got three seeds from Oscar to root but unfortunately died for some unknown reason. I am looking for more seeds if anyone has them?

Version 3: germinating seeds secrete special substances (hormones or pheromones), which begin to awaken dormant seeds nearby. And so on, like a chain reaction ...

I wonder whether the improved germination when recalcitrant seeds germinate with some simple seeds? For example, together with legumes or grains?

Version 4 (main!!! :) ) : Small seedlings usually feel better in the company of their own kind. Kindred spirits attracted to each other and mutually supportive? :)

Years ago, I read a study about seeds and seedlings social behavior. After experiments and  observations, authors stated, that there is some social behaviour, for example it looked like bunch of seedlings in one hole were able "recognize" their "siblings", so if the seeds come from the same fruit, there was no "infighting", but if the seeds were from different fruits/plants, they tried to overgrow each other and also roots "fought" for space.

Yes, I think we are getting closer.  as the seeds release GA3 when germinating, may be being closer together the effect of the GA3 potentialize?  (even I used GA3 in both!)

I don't think this is gonna help to resolve this but i put all my a.spraguei seeds dispersed in big pot with a 2m tall white zapote tree, nearly all of them sprouted, same happened with my a.hayesi ( big pot with an achachairu). I think the big trees' roots help seeds to safely sprout. So far my seedlings are ok.

There can be more going on with seeds than people think and sometimes a lower proportion sprout when crowded due to allelopathy. As seeds are clean it has nothing to do with germination inhibitors in flesh around seeds or acidic promoters in rotting fruit. Seeds of many types produce natural fungicides and insecticides that might get more concentrated in the group. Singles might be overwhelmed or unable to resist tiny insects or fungus.

I am reading now "The Secret Life of the Plants" by Tompkins, the most fantastic book I ever read in the subject, and if not explaining this weird germinating pattern, really explain a lot A LOT of hings about plants, when time allows, will begin a topic about this FANTASTIC book.

This is fascinating.  I noticed this too in my germination of the following:  Annona Squamosa, Syzygium Cuminii, Citrus Mitis, Citrus Ambylcarpa, and Eugenia Uniflora.  Recall about 100% germination on them, when thrown into big pots together.  It seemed like it was "just luck", but this topic makes me want to learn more. Thanks for the insight.

I did an experiment with some Annona edulis seeds received from Trade Winds Fruit.

I soaked three seeds in Gibberellic acid overnight and planted them in seperate pots. No sign from these seeds

Then I planted the other three seeds(No gibberellic acid) all together in one pot. These seeds germinated within a week.

I have some spraguei received from fruitlovers have been using the bag method for 3 months the seeds swelled slightly but haven't germinated but are all still firm and definitely not rotted. Would it be better to wait, plant all the seeds in one pot or apply GA3?

Stuartdaly, I had the same bag germination issue like you 3 plus month, so in my frustration I put them under dwarf coconut tree in a fresh pot of sphagnum and forget two months later they miraculous sprouted left & right, finicky they are for me.  ;D
