Tropical Fruit Discussion / The much maligned cherimoya.
« on: August 12, 2017, 11:19:51 PM »
Im starting this after reading a thread in which BS Bullie stated that most cherimoyas were of better quality than atemoyas. I have cherimoya seedlings but ld only grown them as rootstock. Locally as Mike said, they have a reputation for being inferior to atemoya. Howrver they do grow better here than  atemoya, so if this is true, id like to know which varieties/seeds to go for. After peoples opinions on how they compare.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Think Ive been had.
« on: May 31, 2017, 02:42:10 AM »
I  purchased seeds of what was supposed to be casimiroa sapota aka matasano from rarepalmseeds. Now this plant is closely related to casimiroa edulis. I have been told seedlings should be pretty much the same. Have a look at the pics. The seeds didnt look quite the same as white sapote but were old.  I also put them in ga3  but that doesnt account for milky white sap. Im guessing sapotaceae. Not pouteria as the seeds are wrong but im after opinions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambutan pollen
« on: April 30, 2017, 08:50:02 PM »
I have three korlan trees, theyre not big enough to flower yet but are growing at a fast rate, im hoping in a year or so they will start. I want to try hybridising them with rambutan. Korlan are self fertile and more cold hardy but the fruit is smaller and less sweet. Id like to get some rambutan/pulusan genes in there and see if I can get sime more flavorful offspring. Howeverhave had little luck finding a mature male rambutan or pulusan to purchase. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to store/post pollen of these plants and how to collect it? Im hoping to find someone in qld or the nt with a mature tree and get them to send me some when mine start to fruit.

What are the better of the unusual species, has anyone tried hypoglauca, hayesii, amazonica, coriacea or Spraguei? Also top tropicals lists a muricata x glabra hybrid I wondered if anyone is growing. Want to increase my collection of annona.

If everyone could humour me on this it may be a bit long winded. Back in 2014 Jackfruitwhisperer listed seeds of this tree in this post.

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=12112.msg155504#msg155504

I wasnt lucky enough to get seeds of it and thought no more about it. Then grapebush mentioned he had germinated seeds of a tree he was told was Pouteria sebertii but wasnt sure in this post.

 http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=18610.msg232268#msg232268

I posted some pics and expressed interest in some seeds. Then noted both members were in madeira and assumed that it was the same species as Jackfruitwhisperers.
But grapebush thought it may be a hybrid of  lucuma snd green sapote as the fruit seemed wrong for sebertii. I asked Jackfruitwhisperer and he pointed out the underside coloration of the plants was wrong for both parents.
It wasnt until I was looking for a colombian sapote named pouteria arguacoensium and came across this pic I started to wonder:

It had the same leaves as the members plants and the fruit was close to described as well. Its also a tree rather than a small shrub.  Then I read this:
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=10IMFSavIMsC&pg=PA1657&lpg=PA1657&dq=pouteria+arguacoensium+cultivation&source=bl&ots=7GiQu2JW8T&sig=c81l1CdIZcHXDHU0AD0trH6BRkQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjGrN3UgcDPAhXIHpQKHb8JB48Q6AEIHjAC#v=onepage&q=pouteria%20arguacoensium%20cultivation&f=false
Apparently it was introduced to these islands for its delicious fruits and cultivated for a while. Now I  was really interested so I  looked for pouteria sebertii, syn becarellia/chrysophyllum/planchonella/pleioluma sebertii
This is what I found:

http://www.endemia.nc/flore/fiche1310.html

The big differences are the fruit, described as the size of an olive and is nothing like the cut open one Jackfruitwhisperer pictured. The only actual pic i could find for pouteria arguacoensium is this one the fruit is on the right but im not sure its accurate. But its closer to the fruit grapenush pictured.

Anyone seen pouteria siebertii in its homeland? Or have a plant not sourced from madeira? Id appreciate any thoughts or if people did get seeds of this specimen and theyve got pics id love to see it. If also appreciate any members opinions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potting mix
« on: September 22, 2016, 12:31:10 AM »
Ive just discovered a soils yard that mixes potting mix to order, its a little dearer but you see exactly what goes in. I purchased some standard acid mix for my bananas and was going to get some more for my jabos and eugenias and am wondering if its worth getting iron chelate mixed in? Are there any other minerals worth adding?

Okay, I've read the reviews about old seeds etc, but how do their seeds go for correct identification? In the past month theyve had 2 species I was after come into stock. The first was Pouteria glomerata. I  bought a 10pk as soon as I saw them and they were gone within a day or 2. When the seeds arrived they were a little fibrous on the outside unlike the other pouteria seed I've seen.  Theyre planted but I might pick one out and take a pic. The other is casimiroa sapota. A relative of casimiroa edulis. I have bought some but I  am thinking it may be just a mislabeled edulis, they dont normally respond to emails so I was curious if anyone had a track record with their seeds.

Anyone heard of this one? Its a rootstock originally labelled g755. Its apparently a natural hybrid between a guatamalan persea americana and persea schiedeana.

I purchased some seeds of this from Vitor in brazil, all bar a couple germinated. But I saw bsbullie mention the blacks dont come true to type? I would have thought the wild ones would be reasonably stable. Anyone have any experience with this?

Anyone growing this one? Its small size sounds good if the fruit size is still okay?

I am asking this as I have some korlan trees and I'm thinking of topworking rambutan on a couple. Now my korlan are only a foot tall, and 2 years old but have quite happily gone through a week of 0 - 2 degree celsius nights with no leaf loss or obvious stress. But they have slowed down and that got me thinking. Is it the cold tolerance of the rootstock or its vigour in cooler weather that affects the topstock? I know rootstocks are used for soil tolerance, dwarfing tendencies, improved vigour etc, but I cant see how the korlan would make the rambutan more cold hardy, is it that the korlans better winter vigour may allow it to regrow from damage? Will it force the rambutan to keep growing in the cooler temps? Or is there something more at work like a change in hormone balance in the rambutan due to the rootstock that allows it to cope better? Im not sure theyre even compatible but a few members suggested it once and I thought id try it.
