Tropical Fruit Discussion / diospyros montana edible?
« on: August 03, 2015, 06:55:35 PM »
Tradewinds fruits list this species as edible, but after some googling I'm not so sure. The references either state inedible until fully ripe, inedible or toxic. Anyone have any other information on this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / jabo
« on: July 28, 2015, 09:46:45 PM »
I noticed in the container plants post there is a picture of a grafted jabo fruiting from what looks like below the graft. It made me wonder,  given Adams results with graft compatibility. Could you grow a jabo to 1 metre, then graft another variety, grow that a metre  then topwork a third, this could give you 3 varieties on one. Would all trunks fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / diospyros and garcinia/rheedia hybrids?
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:22:25 PM »
I am germinating seeds of a few species of each of these seeds and wondered if there are any hybrids out there. These plants are generally dioecious and a few members here grow them in close proximity. It gives scope for some unusual combinations. Maybe lucs × imbe or lucs by achacha etc. The same for diospyros  maybe decandra x texana and the rest. Anyone come across this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / lucuma as rootstock
« on: July 13, 2015, 08:02:57 PM »
I have a few rare pouteria plants Id like to propogate and I have quite a few lucuma seedlings. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this genera. The lucuma is attractive to me as its cold hardy and I can get seeds easily. Im just not sure of compatability.  Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Queensland
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:56:36 AM »
Hi Everyone, not sure if this is the place to post so please move if you have too. I am hoping to visit Queensland in January 2016 and am looking for reccomended places to see. I am going to try and split my time between the south and north. Whilst on the gold coast I am going to head down into northern nsw and see tropical fruit world, Daleys if possible, forbidden fruits, burringbarr nursery as well as a few others, in the north I am going to try get to limberlost and maybe get as north as cape tribulation tropical fruit farm. If anyone has any recommendations on places to visit, or are willing to share their experiences, gardens etc, I would appreciate any info anyone has to offer. PM me or post here.
Regards

« on: April 25, 2015, 08:06:03 AM »

Tropical Fruit Discussion / vaccinium padifolium
« on: April 18, 2015, 04:27:17 AM »
There are low chill blueberries I know but when it comes to sub tropical and tropical climates, even some of these can be recalcitrant fruiters. I have aquired seeds of the maidera blueberry and am going to have a go  fruiting them. They have been used in hybridizing projects for commercial blueberry cultivars. They are supposedly almost evergreen and frost tender hopefully translating to no chill. they can also be pruned to one trunk. If i can germinate them I will give a few updates on how they are going.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sicily
« on: March 26, 2015, 09:31:47 PM »
Hi all, i am in the process of purchasing 4 acres of land near cefalu in sicily. Though not tropical as such i think alot of what people have here would grow. Theres a well for irrigation, and its hillside near the coast so shouldnt get frost. Im looking for reccommendations, what plants would be a must have. They will  have to be seed grown. Below is a climate map the temps are farenheit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / eugenia sp mulgrave river
« on: March 06, 2015, 07:03:28 AM »

The other australian eugenia. I got this at the same time as my eugenia reinwardtiana and dimocarpus australianus. As far as i can tell it is still an unresolved specimen. Its slow, in 6 odd years its still a small shrub. with small fruit its more a novelty than anything but I have planted the seeds hoping for some new ones, may even try it as a dwarfing rootstock.
