Update On Blooms - Myrciaria phitrantha var. Otto Anderson
« on: October 25, 2015, 11:25:09 AM »
Blooms are starting to open on my m. phitrantha var. Otto Anderson. I'm hoping they pollinate this year. it's been windy down here and that may work in my favor but I'll probably also go around with a small paint brush to transfer.  I also have sporadic pollination problems with my Grimal some years.

Looking real nice!

I think the timing is good for fruits to set!

Let's pray for a warm 'n' wet winter

Keep us posted on the fruit set status

Aren't the meteorologist predicting a cold and wet winter in south Florida because of that massive El Nino?

Did your rootstock ever set fruits?

How often does it flower?

Jabomano, please post pics of the pithandra friut if they set. I'm very interested to see how they compare against other jabos we are familiar with.  I'm very envious of all those fantastic specimen.

The tree is a graft. I used a fruiting size sabara and had 5 m. phitrantha var. otto anderson scions grafted to it. I cut off all sabara vegetative growth/limbs so all that is left is m. phitrantha. After the first year the rootstock stopped producing vegetative growth. I have absolutely no sabara growth except for the fruit. I could have stripped the sabara flowers in hope of more phitrantha blooms but didn't.

Very nice vid jaboman. Thanks for sharing.  I thought you had a seedling tree.  Do you have photos of the graft union?

That's awesome!  This is the first time I've seen pics of a tree with two types of fruit at once.

looks like you can top work a mature tree, and still have two types of fruit...sabara can fruit on the roots...so every grafted tree with sabara rootstock is like a cocktail tree

Well done, That is a great looking tree! I have had some difficulties getting phitrantha grafts to take. Did you experience difficulties, or have any suggestions? I've been successful with grafting other varieties, however the phitrantha eludes me. Thanks!

A friend of mine did the grafting with no difficulties. Flying Fox Fruits has an outstanding video on how to graft jabuticaba.
