Satisfying my Mamey Fix in South Florida (West Palm Beach)
« on: April 23, 2014, 02:31:22 PM »
Have found a few locations in the area, but have been quite pricey.. Any spots in the West Palm Beach area that offer fairly priced Mamey Sapote?

Cheers,
D

What are the prices you are getting and what would you consider fair?

I was contemplating planting a Mamey, my research came back saying it takes a year before it is ready. Is that true? I am a bit to impatient for that tree.
I buy my occasional fruit from Bender's, still looking for a variety I "must" have.

depending on the variety, will take 3-6 years to begin to fruit (Pace is most precocious and Pantin will take the longest).  Once it is old enough to set fruit and hold to maturity, yes, it take in excess of a year from fruit formation to harvest, about 15 months or so.  It does not seem as bad as the tree ages as you will have two crops on the tree at the same time, the forming fruits and the maturing fruits so that you will get a consistent crop every year.  Timewise, no different than a mango...you only get one mango crop per year.

Rob, what are your favorites for taste/texture (low grit)?
Looking to add 2 more mamey--already have pace.
I have enjoyed the maganas I have been getting from Benders recently, but have little else to compare them to.

Any suggestions?

Would not plant Magana, thats just my 2 cents.

I like Lorito the best.  Cepeda Especiale and Excalibur are also excellent.  Pantin is good and Florida can be really good.  All of these are better than Pace, IMO.  Viejo, to me, can be inconsistent in its quality.  If space is an issue, I would go with one mamey and one green sapote (if you dont already have a green sapote).

Paid $3.50/lb some chinese market in Palm Beach Gardens and also Cuban market in West Palm Beach.  No idea re: variety except that they were grown in Homestead.

No idea re: variety, but they've tasted great and I've included a photo of one of them here.
