Venezuelan Annona sp. ID
« on: April 23, 2015, 01:44:55 AM »
This Annona sp grows in Masaguaral Farm, North-West Venezuela, they called it Manirito de Agua.
This is not Annona cornifolia variety because seeds shape and germ structure absolutly different.
Seed shape close to A. spraguei and A. jahnii but near twice bigger.
Many thanks for seeds and info to our Venezuelan friend Victoria "Lilith".  :)

That fruit is so pretty!
I wonder how big it is and what it looks like inside :)

right on!

yes I compared your photo to my cornifolia...the bottom of the leaf of your species is much different!  (whitish, and smooth)

also fruit looks much larger...I wonder if it's good eating?

the cornifolia is not worth eating.

(btw, looks like someone has set up house right above the fruit!  They have annona fruit front property!)  :P

Something is odd about that photo. If you enlarge it, you'll see how the fruit is ODDLY "attached" to the stem. And the bottom left of the fruit has some kind of black shadows...
An Annona fruit that we know (sugar apple, cherimoya, atemoya, custard apple) would not hold to the stem under such condition.

yes where the stem attaches to the fruit, it looks like it's been damaged...usually the fruit slips right off the stem at this phase (for common annonas)...but maybe this species is not that way?

Yes, look like fruit was photoshoped to the steem...   ;)
Maybe fruit was found under the plant on the ground, plant and fruit photographed separately and then made photoshop for a better view? Anyway I think this fruit is from this plant.

We need help of some professional botanists for true ID this Annona sp.
Anybody has such contacts?

Definitely not photoshopped. It looks like either the fruit fell from the plant, or more likely was pulled out, and then they wanted to take a photo of it on the tree and stuck it back on the plant for the photo.

....or simply the fruit was so ready for ripe and soft that its weight pushed the fruit on one side damaging the skin..

I'm very curious about the flavour...

What became of this? Is it really different from Cornifolia? Any seeds or seedlings being grown out?
Feel free to pm me if you have any ANNONACEAE for sale‼️

If I had to guess, I would guess it's A. Nutans or A. Spinescens.

A. Nutans was sold about 2 months ago on eBay for $200, Spinescens seeds are being sold by seedshuntershop.com right now, but you can also sometimes find seedlings of Spinescens on eBay.

This species was identified by a botanist as "Annona punicifolia" and seeds were sold the last time by forum member "Lilith-vzla" in 2018. It took her family a few weeks to get this species as the only way to get it was through depths of swampland and thick rainforest. I think it would be best to contact her and ask if her seedlings already bear fruits. Either way, good luck for finding and growing this species.

This is the sellers post from 2018: https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=29397.msg331991#msg331991
