So mutli-rootstock grafting + sorta airlayer? I wonder what the purpose of this is?

It's the way they propagate mango trees in Thailand.
From what they say the tree grows faster so they make more mangoes which means more money.
It's not air-layering, those are roots from seedlings. More roots means faster growth.

Very interesting how they cut the main root on the seedlings, and they still form more roots. I have cut the main center root before and most seedlings die on me, I guess root stock matters!

I think the key difference is that the root is grafted on to a plant that is not relying on it for everything.  It has time to grown and establish before the new plant is taken off the parent.
In your case if you cull the roots of the sedling, the plant had too few leaves to support it and may fail.

Awesome video. I've seen a video of this technique before, but didn't see the end result. Now I get it. They have solved the problem of mango being a poor air layer specimen.
