Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hand pollinating cacao
« on: May 26, 2023, 05:22:43 PM »
Outside, with a lot of trees, where the local insects pollinate, I think the fruit set rate is much higher, and there ARE varieties that are self-fertile.  One study stated that the fruit set rate is 1%-50% overall, with the higher number being the CCN-51.  I HAVE had fruit set on my trees with no pollination, but it is literally one or two pods per tree at the most.

Self-incompatibility is the nature's way to prevent genetic decline.

Wish I could get my hands on some seeds from some very self-fertile, high quality varieties.  Because my trees are in a greenhouse, unless I pollinate, I get zero fruit.

So I must be lucky to grow this tree which I brought some years ago from Nicaragua. It is not only self compatible but dwarf - tree after 20 y is not more than 7 ft high. This year it produced about 20 + pods, last year which was the first year of its fertility it produced only one. I didn't do any pollination...

Really cool to see these plants offered overseas!

Wondering if the pictured plant is "garcinia intermedia?"

Looks closer to g. humilis or g. brasiliensis to me. Not sure, but the leaves are different (longer and skinnier) than what I've seen/have.

Whatever the case, should be great fruit. Intermedia is tasty and fun to eat, and it gets better from there.

Cheers!

May be. But the seeds were bought as G. intermedia All plants from this batch have the same leaves.

That's a really nice looking tree, polux.  How tall is it?  My cacao is tall and skinny right now, about 6ft tall in a 5gal container.  I am thinking of cutting it back to a lower node

Actually about 7 ft. I have 2 other varieties and they are much taller without flowering or fruiting

8
This is my cocoa tree that I brought 20 year ago from Nicaragua. 15 y was grown in a container indoors, after that I decided to plant it in a greenhouse. 2 y of fruiting. It is a dwarf Trinitario hybrid.

Blue jabuticaba (Myrciaria vexator) 40 - 50 cm high 30€ sounds interesting; can it be kept small or does it grow to a big tree? (i have no much space). And is it self fertile?

No any plant can grow that fast as fast you can prune it ;)  Blue jaboticaba tolerate pruning well but it is fast growing species.

14
Hi.
Do you also sell Plinia phitrantha ESALQ seeds?

Hi, now it is nearly impossible to get some new interesting plant species due to new EU regulations. Plants that I offer are older plants from my collection, I havent enough space for all of them. Sorry no any seeds of P.P. ESALQ

15
I'm just wondering if the jabuticaba are grafted or grown from seed. I just want to know how long I'd have to wait for them to fruit.

They are all from seeds.

IM not sure about soil requirements. It is from Cerrado region so can be tricky for cultivation.

I have one potted plant about 1 ft high- compared to other Brosimum I have it is sensitive to overwatering. Free soil planting may be better way for it.

Are they monoecious and self compatible? My smaller plant started to flower right now

20
Thanks roblack, those are true black pepper leafs.  My plant is monoecious because it is plantation variety. But seedlings from their fruits can be both - monoecious or dioecious. Better is propagation by cuttings.

I want to do the same here in EU. Reserve some space for durian seedling I brought last year from Malaysia . Greenhouse conditions are enough for cinnamons, nutmeg, cola so why not durian. Only problem may be the size of the plant... We will see. 8)

« on: June 22, 2020, 06:11:47 PM »
Today I was surprised with my Ooray plum plant. Dont know what the exact species it is - probably Davidsonia jersyana but such a small plant and give the first fruits.

24
Actually I have only this one from my phone

25
Ive never seen any seeds on my damiana plants. Lot of flowers but no any seed. T. ulmifolia is totally different - lot of flowers, lot of seeds but it is not true damiana- smell is not pleasant. Only reliable way to propagate damiana are cuttings which may be tricky to root.
