Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2023 Mango Season
« on: February 05, 2023, 09:45:33 AM »
It looks like it's going to be a good year.  I've got confirmed bloom on Banganpalli, Jehangir, Kesar, Jumbo Kesar, Julie, Dot, East Indian, Janardhan Pasand, USDA Himsagar, Neelam, Mahmood Vikarabad, #11, and Alumpur Baneshan.   I'm spraying the heck out of them this year cuz I'm tired of losing fruit to powdery mildew attacks.  Waiting for bloom on Borsha, Malda, Sindhri, Manohar, Sonpari, Panchadarakalasa, Dashiri and Royal Special.

Probably most interesting collection of mango trees, why did you decide on these varieties?

Thanks,

Joe
I guess I'm just a sucker for the unusual.  The downside of collecting oddballs is that there are often very good reasons they are uncommon.  Not fruiting well (or not fruiting at all) seems to be a pretty common one :-(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Your favorite South Florida Nursery

Chris at Truly Tropical in Delray Beach and Alex at Tropical Acres in West Palm.  I also second the recommendation for Julian at Lara Farms. All 1st class nurseries.

Sorry, I do not.

Message me in July of next year and I'll be happy to send you some.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting mangoes in S. Florida?

Mulgoba.  Mulgoba.  Mulgoba. :-)

I have all 3, but I'm afraid I won't have budwood until next year.  I just pruned the trees back a few weeks ago.  Sorry.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Osteen Mango - as a late variety
« on: September 07, 2021, 01:46:29 PM »
I had Osteen for the first time this year.  It was nice enough that I bought scions.

I believe there is some question regarding the authenticity of Banganapalli.  Regardless, "Banganapalli" is an excellent and highly productive mango.

Mahmood Vikarabad, Janardhan Pasand, Fernandin, and Pedda Rasam.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pintangatuba pollination
« on: August 25, 2021, 10:48:09 AM »
I've had 4 bushes growing for 7 years.  They are all 3-4 ft tall.  They all bloom regularly, but don't set any fruit.  They are pretty bushes, but a complete waste of space if the goal is fruit production.

12
Is this the same as Cabessa mango?  That's also an gigantic fruit.  If it is, it's already available as a grafted tree in Florida.

13
Agreed.  Free mulch.

Mulgoba and Janardhan Pasand were my standouts this year.  Son Pari and Jehangir were my disappointments.

--  Adding Pedda Rasam as a standout -- really, really good this year.

It resembles Arka Anmol.

Have you checked with Tropical Acres?  They may have PK trees available as well.

Good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rootstock for Couepia polyandra (Olosapo)
« on: March 30, 2021, 02:38:41 PM »
I bought a couple of "improved" Olosapo seeds a few years ago, and now the tree I retained is big enough to supply bud wood - but I have no idea what to use as rootstock.  Is anyone grafting Olosapo?  Please help :-)

Thanks!

Does anyone know if these species will cross-pollinate?  I have a self fertile M. bujugata and I'd love to add M. oliviformus as well, but I don't have space for a pollinator.

20
I don't have either one of those but I was curious if you ever came across 'Benque' in your search.
I haven't run across it, but I know a few people who might have it.  I'll check and let you know.

Sorry Fruitscapes didn’t work. I was there a few weeks ago and they had 2-3 small 3g Tikals left that I saw. I picked one of them up.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll just have to visit him :-)

22
Just a quick update:  Fruitscapes was a bust.  He had them - then mysteriously didn't have them.  Anyway, still looking so if anyone out there has any sources I'd really appreciate the help.

Best regards,
Scott

Will do.  I'm super excited to taste it.  I have it grafted on a Francis tree that is also housing Ryan, Keitt, Panchadarakalasa, Royal Special, Kurashige, Tete Nene and Pineapple Pleasure.  I'm crossing my fingers for some interesting cross-pollination.

24
That's great!  Fernandin is blooming very well for me this year as well.  It's first year bloom on fairly new grafts, so I'm crossing my fingers that I get some fruit as well.  Can't wait to try it :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Posh-Te on Soursop
« on: February 02, 2021, 02:37:04 PM »
You may want to research/test if mountain soursop is compatible. They are more vigorous and handle colder temperatures. Anonnas are relatively easy to graft. I do cleft and veneers.

Thanks for the recommendation.  I have some seeds growing, but it will be a year or so before they are large enough to graft anything on.

I got some graft size montana stock. I support the experiment. Swing by next time you get a chance.

Thanks, Sayyid.  I'll do that :-)
