I live in 9b and our temperature here got as low as 26 degrees F on one night and 29 degrees F on two separate nights this January 2018.  I have 3 young Beaumont macadamia trees and 1 young Arkin papershell macadamia tree (about 3 feet tall each) planted in the ground.  The Beaumont trees had less leaf damage than the Arkin.  All the trees made it through the cold just fine.  I also have two dozen seedlings of unknown parentage planted in the ground and in pots.  Three of the seedlings did not do well.  However, most of the rest suffered very little damage.
