Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let's talk about pineapple again
« on: August 21, 2019, 01:20:40 PM »
I had an amazing pineapple to taste this year. Bought two plants at a Flea Market with no name tag but they looked very healthy and different from what I grow. The seller didn't know the variety name. Well, they fruited and the fruit looked long conical in shape (weird) and a bunch of pups and suckers. The whole plant looked like a bush with the hidden pineapple inside..  ;D The taste of this pineapple blew me off. It was so sweet and juicy. It was gone in a few minutes, lol. The inside was translucent white/pale yellow. So, I thought before it was a sugarloaf but I had one before that was different. I looked it up and found a few videos on YouTube about Eleuthera pineapple and it looks very similar to what I got. Does anybody else grow this pineapple and can tell me what variety is it?

Some pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple variety ID

Can you guys ID this pineapple variety for me? I thought it was a 'Smooth Cayenne'? Now, I'm not sure. Does it look like it to you? The plant itself is big/wide but fruit is so small. The color of the fruit turned black recently.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple 'bonsai' ))
« on: February 25, 2018, 01:33:29 PM »
This poor thing was damaged, broke off while moving to the garage for the cold snap we had coming. The plant or I should say the trunk of the mother plant was 5 or 6 years old. It was producing fruit and suckers every year. It was hanging over the planter so I had to put a support under it. I was planning to try to root it later but it kind of happend by itself. When it broke off I didn't want to throw it away and did't have much time to 'play' with it, so I just found a container with the dead plant and just stuck it in and forgot about it. Moved it in the greenhouse first. It didn't look great, yellow/brown leaves. I pruned those leaves and brought it to the garage because of the freeze warnings and the center of the pineapple was still green-ish. I thought.... hm, maybe... and forgot about it until found it flowering the other day. What a surprise!!  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID
« on: August 13, 2017, 11:50:52 AM »
I found a Guava that I really like. Bought some at Walmart as a Pink guava. It's green outside and pink inside but also in the middle it's like a jelly with less but bigger seeds. It tastes good to me and I would like to know what variety it is. I could plant some seeds but they may not turn out the same in a few years. I would love to buy a fruiting tree instead of waiting for these years.
Here are some pics.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Want: Ananas 'Pacifico'
« on: June 06, 2017, 03:53:44 PM »
Red Ananas 'Pacifico'. It's so hard to find in US!  :( Does anybody have or know where I can get them from? They sell it like an ornamental house plan but the fruit said to be edible if fully ripe, small though. Anyway, I like its appearance and would like to have it in my collection.

Citrus General Discussion / Fresh Market citrus fruits
« on: April 14, 2017, 12:51:06 PM »
I checked out our Fresh Market and I am glad I did.  :) Found some nice new to me citrus fruits. They order from Melissa's which is cool. I had a chance to taste Ojai Pixies. Also got to taste the Lemonade lemon and I liked it a lot. Too bad they're gone, I bought only two. Pixies from Ripe to You are very sweet.

Citrus General Discussion / Grapefruit from seed
« on: March 03, 2017, 12:04:56 PM »
I planted the grapefruit seed a couple of yours ago. The fruit was very sweet and juicy, big round white inside. I have no idea what the variety it was. The co-worker gave it to me as her friend's tree was loaded with a lot of huge fruits and most of them dropped on the ground so she picked them up and brought to work to give to everybody. She couldn't see such a good fruit going to waste. It was really good, so I couldn't resist and planted a seed. My question is when the grapefruit tree grown from seed will start flowering and produce fruit? I've heard it may take 6 to 10 years. Is it true?

Citrus General Discussion / Sanguinelli Blood Orange
« on: February 05, 2017, 09:15:01 PM »
The orange fell off the tree. Looks like it wasn't fully ripe yet but it was deliciously sweet and got some red pigmentation inside. The lowest temps we had 37F so far.

It's not Vaniglia. I meant to say Sanguinelli.  :-[ I'm sorry for the confusion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mexican Cream Guavas?
« on: February 01, 2017, 03:32:10 PM »
I got these Guava trees from Walmart and Lowe's. The tugs say "Mexican Cream" but all three trees look different. Any ideas what they really are? Looks like they're air layered not seedlings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Blooming pineapple
« on: September 19, 2016, 02:17:26 PM »
Wow, I am so excited! My Pina Sugarloaf decided to bloom at this time of year. :o Got it from Floridahill nursery almost 2 years ago. It was a little plant in 6" pot and it is in a 1 gall pot right now smaller than all of my pineapples. I wish the Sweet Stripes did the same. ::) I can't believe it.  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pink guava
« on: September 15, 2016, 08:03:51 PM »
Got some guava fruits from Walmart. The sticker says Pink Guava. Later I found out it's light pink which is new for me and I did like the taste. It tastes almost like the Thai white apple guava, firm and a lot of seeds. I am going to plant some seeds and hope I get the same fruit one day.  :) I have a 7 feet tall Pink guava tree and the fruits are good but a little different soft inside and dark pink. Does anybody else has this light pink variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruits of this year on my backyard.
« on: September 10, 2016, 08:40:10 PM »
Hi everybody.  :) Wanted to post some pics of my fruits I harvested this year so far and there are more coming. I grow everything in containers as you probably know. Anyway, here is a papaya I had today and it was delicious. Too bad, only one fruit. Need to replant the tree asap. The container it's in is too small.

Triumph persimmon - delicious. :) Got 7 fruits this year. Very happy with the tree.

Mascadine grape on the left, grown from seed. I have no idea what variety. Strawberry guava on the right. Very tasty fruit. Wish I had more.

Pineapples. Got 18 of them this year (only 4 last year). Three containers had 3 fruits. Four - 2 fruits and a couple - just 1. My patio smelled like haven. ;D Unfortunately, I lost 2 nice size ripe pineapples to some kinda animal passing by. :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID

I found these guava fruits at Walmart. The pink color has caught my eye and I picked some. The taste is very nice creamy and sweet. They don't have that strong guava fragrance. Can somebody ID these guavas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Smooth surinam cherry
« on: March 06, 2016, 12:48:58 PM »
Noticed this morning... flower buds?  :o

I got this little plant from Adam a year ago. It grows really really slow. Seems like it didn't grow at all. The tag was lost but I believe it stated Smooth Surinam cherry (small fruits). Adam, could you confirm that? And, is it normal for this plant to fruit in that size? Was it a seedling or grafted? I know you may not remember but maybe you do.  ::)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Variegated Pineapple
« on: October 12, 2015, 10:51:46 AM »
My new pineapple plant's from Just Fruits and Exotics. I ordered them by phone and went to pick up from the nursery later. I didn't expect them to be that big. Wow, what a nice surprise.  :)  Anyway, I wanted to show you guys these beautiful plants. They look different than the other variegated pineapples I have in my collection. That's exciting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID?
« on: September 05, 2015, 03:33:01 PM »
I got the guava tree from Walmart and it had the tag Mexican Guava. I was wondering if it was Mexican Cream Guava. You never know what you can buy at Walmart.   :) It was flowering in 1gal pot and I got a good set of fruits. A couple started to smell good, got bigger in size, and soft to the touch still being green. One fell of the tree when I was trying to tight droopy limbs to the trellis (another one disappeared last night :(). So I tasted it today. Here are a few pics. The fruit was soft (creamy) inside not crunchy and had less bigger but seeds, not very sweet but pleasant taste.
