Tropical Fruit Discussion / 8B Avocado varieties (tested)
« on: July 05, 2022, 07:54:10 PM »
Local nurseries here in zone 8B are selling Avocados now. The ones that we all here about for cold hardiness (fantastic/Joey/super haas) but I don’t see any avocado trees in the area. Has anyone planted and actually tested any of these varieties in zone 8 long term?

Citrus General Discussion / Thoughts on water sprout removal
« on: May 24, 2022, 01:36:33 PM »
So what’s the latest consensus on this? All my trees were growing low growth (above graft union) and sprouting on the trunk, I removed it but I was curious if I should bother.

Citrus General Discussion / Smudge pots?
« on: April 29, 2022, 11:17:25 AM »
I went on a citrus buying spree in zone 8B . Got trees through this last winter but only got to 21 degrees so nothing horrible but epic freezes are a regular occurrence in 8B. So I know about old Christmas lights (where to get those?), frost fabric...but now I’m thinking smudge pots as a great backup in case power goes out....anyone have experience with these? How far do you keep them from trees?

Which of these varieties would be better in a protected area of 8B. An area where supplemental heat can be supplied/south facing wall. Thanks!

Looking to put in new satsumas. Just curious about opinions on these 4 varieties available at a local nursery. I was strongly considering the frost varieties due to cold hardiness but based on initial research that seems to be sketchy. Also very limited I do on the taste on the frost varieties. Any opinions greatly appreciated! Thank

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus tree damage
« on: December 03, 2021, 11:01:17 AM »
I’m usually very cautious not to but defective trees( I tend to be destructive enough without help) but apparently I missed some pretty bad damage below the graft on this 5 gallon grapefruit. Is it worth keeping or salvaging or to compost camp?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / zone confusion
« on: July 20, 2019, 08:44:43 PM »
Is Clermont/Groveland a zone 9a or b? I planted  things hardy to 9b but the bomb was dropped on me that it’s actually 9a yet most maps consider it 9b? I do notice a temp drop of at least 5 degrees between my cousin in winter park and Clermont. I also notice many more tropical /semi tropical trees in Winter Park as compared to here. Thanks in advance!

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus worth planting?
« on: May 30, 2019, 08:48:27 AM »
So I’m thinking of bringing my citrus trees down to FL and putting them in the ground within the food forest I’m building but is it worth it with the greening issues?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Central Florida food forest ideas.
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:36:46 PM »
I’ve been trying to compile a list of reliable central Florida (Orlando area) fruit tree food forest. Based on my reading it seems not all that different in terms what will survive from zone 7. By survive I mean guaranteed, not being knocked off by a relatively common winter freeze in the area. I’m not planning to build tents or set up micro-climates, just looking for trees I can count on.

I’m shocked at the nurseries selling soursop, a tree that has absolutely no chance to survive outdoors in the area.

Here is a list I compiled, please let me know if I’m missing anything...

Low chill peaches

Low chill apples

Persimmon

Pawpaw

Pomegranate

Loquat

Citrus

White sapote (maybe)

Atemoya (maybe)

Mulberry

**I was dreaming of a fig forest but my understanding is nematodes all but ruin that possibility so I’ll keep my fig collection above ground**

Citrus General Discussion / Neonic migration
« on: December 29, 2018, 02:07:38 PM »
So I have purchased a bunch of citrus trees the past few years being fully aware of the fact they were treated with systemic poisons (neonics). I know they stay in the tree for a few years but how much of the neonics migrate from the potting soil into ground and water supplies after a heavy rain? My pet ducks were drinking from a puddle of water next to the treated citrus tree and even ate a few leaves off the tree so made me wonder again about how much leaching occurs....

I has this papaya shipped to me. I notice this clear residue area on it. It has a chemical smell. Could this be tanglefoot residue? Perhaps a disease? I tried wiping it off with vinegar but no luck..

« on: September 28, 2018, 07:50:29 PM »
Assuming one was to follow directions, how much does elemental sulfer lower PH? I added some to my potted tropicals that had a PH of 7 so I wanted to get that down to 6.0-6.5. ..
