Those are tough plants! I heard from 2 growers in Texas that they survived 16 F this year and have recovered with blooms. A pretty tasty fruit if completely ripe and soft to the touch!

I've had phalsa growing and fruiting here for many years. I wasn't too fond of the fruits at first, but notice flavor improved quite a bit when i started fertilizing them. It's easy to grow, prolific, and very ornamental.

Health Benefits of Phalsa

Falsa fruit has several traditional health benefits. According to the “Encyclopedia of World Medicinal Plants,” phalsa is an astringent, coolant, and stomatic. In vedic times, the bark was used as a demulcent and serves as a treatment for rheumatism. Ground leaves treat pustular infections, and possess strong antimicrobial and antibacterial properties capable of remedying E.coli. Unsurprisingly, given the fruit’s arrival during the scorching summer months, the fruit treats dehydration and acts as a coolant.

Phalsa has several health benefits substantiated by the scientific community as well:

--According to an article published by the Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, phalsa is a low glycemic index fruit, thereby having positive effects on blood glucose metabolism. Simply put, the fruit is a good choice for those with blood sugar problems such as diabetes.

--Like other purple-skinned fruits, phalsa has strong irradiation protection qualities due to its amazing free radical scavenging activities. Such findings were explored in a 2009 study published by the Journal of Radiological Protection, and affirmed again in another 2008 study published in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine.

--Amazingly, a 2011 study published in “Der Pharma Chemica” found that falsa fruit and leaves exhibited significant anticancer activities against breast cancer cells and liver cancer cells. This affirms traditional Native American applications of the fruit against cancer-like illnesses.

--According to a study published in the “International Journal of Food Science & Technology,” phalsa significantly inhibited fungal growth, thereby supporting its traditional use as an antifungal and antimicrobial.

How large do they get?  Is 3 or 4 plants enough?

From personal conversation with Dr. Parmar (Fruitipedia) found out that in India phalsa fruits, in the form of a juice made there, is mostly consumed by pregnant women, as it is considered very helpful to them.
BTW, native americans never ate phalsa as it is an Asian plant.

A couple of plants is enough for one person. It is a small bushy plant. They like to be pruned, to you can easily control their size.

I sell phalsa seeds through my website. But not fruiting right now. They fruit in late summer. Seeds need to be fresh for good germination.

Mine did well with full sun ( starting around 11 am ). I should have followed up on my own post , had lots of fruits and just pruned the whole plant back to 1 meter .
Berries were small about 6 - 7 mm , nice flavor , that's why I decided to keep the plant .

Advice for Grewia asiatica seeds

Since this tree is not fruiting in quantity I am curious how to store the seeds for future germination.

Should they be dried out ?  kept moist ? Planted right away or can they be saved for future planting ?

Thanks,

Best is if you can plant them fresh, ofcourse. But you can dry them and refrigerate to store. No need to keep moist. These plants are from mild temperate areas of India, so used to dormant season.

To Luisport : Greetings. Much impressed by your detailed benefits of Phalsa / Grewia asiatica and is new to me. As Oscar put it nicely the sherbat is a popular fruitjuice in Delhi and the fresh fruits are tasty (1954 experience). Also there are many different types of phalsa (Grewia) shrubs in the whole continent including the Tropical Southern Parts of India.
I just want to inform you that nowadays you see all unauthenticated news you see about the medicinal properties of any plant you think of. What happened to that wonder fruit NONI? Before recent years it was called in one area as 'kakke kai' which literally means a fruit only eaten by CROWS.. Benefits of Bermuda grass : Cooking = They put it in soup. They blend it with coconut, chilly, tamarind and season it and mix with rice. And few others. About health and diseases = Controls blood sugar, boosts immunity, relieves all kinds of ORAL diseases and ailments, cures bleeding gums, relieves from constipation, cures all types of menstrual problems and poly cystic ovarian syndrome, improves digestion and acidity, cures eye infection and stops nose bleeding.cures obesity, purifies blood, cures all kinds of skin diseases and scores of others.Just look in the net. By now they may list it for Covid-19 cure!  Regards.

Purdue has some good info. I got one from Wellspring this spring. Hopefully it's more like the Indian one Purdue evaluated than the Miami 12489 one. "Indian phalsa was more fruitful and had tastier fruits than the MIA-12489 line." Mine does have a pointed apex, prominent veins, and no white blush underside. https://hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proceedings1999/v4-348.html
