Removed a 10 year old in ground Clementine tree......
« on: November 29, 2014, 09:41:06 PM »
......and replaced it with a Dekopon.  It was a bit of a decision. The Clementine was my first in ground citrus tree.  It had grown to 11-ft. high and wide.  But I can buy Clementines just about anywhere, and the legendary Dekopon claimed to be the worlds best tasting citrus fruit, and not sold in Colorado. Being in Colorado I must grown my in ground trees inside a greenhouse, and I only have so much room.  Deciding to use greenhouse space for a clementine or a Dekopon - I chose Dekopon. - Millet

Millet,

What is your source for the Dekopon?  I have been looking out for it as well.  Thanks

Millet I would have thought your own Clementine fruit would have tasted better than 90% of what you could buy in the grocery store ? Tom

Pasca,  I purchased my Dekopon tree from Harris Citrus in Florida.  You being a California resident will have to locate a Dekopon source within the state of California.  That will be difficult. - Millet

Tom you may be correct, but there is only so much room inside a greenhouse, and a Dekopon taste a LOT better than a Clementine. - Millet

Millet, you made a wise choice. Ive grown many different types of citrus, probably not as many as you have but, the dekopan is the most impressive citrus I have grown. They are extremely prolific, obviously the fruit is top shelf, they grow fast and are a really nice tree visually. They are not overly or especially sensitive to bugs or micro deficiencies, no cold type defoliation, nothing. One thing though - since the fruit is so heavy you may have to support it. The one on the left has no support the right one dose. These are 2-3 year old trees between 15 and 20 fruits each. I have 4 of them, here are the two that I cut back as soon as i got them to be more of a bush form. thee other 2 are not easily moved. all 4 are from Harris citrus FL. couldn't be happier with the dekopan

I don't see dekopon on harris' website.  Is it one of those, call and ask deals where they have it but not on the site?

gunnar , Harris has Dekopon listed under its actual name Shiranui (name for a town in Japan).  Go to Harris's web site, then click on mandarin, then look for Shiranui.    - Millet

Ryan, your Dekopon trees are stunning.  You grow the best looking container citrus I have ever seen.  Better than mine.   Thanks for the pictures, Amazing. - Millet

Those pots look small.  At what point will you up-pot them?  Or do they require little room for roots to grow?

Well, they grew really fast, so I guess Ill move them up soon maybe this time next year. They have only been in those for about 1.5 years, planted directly from the narrow tree nursery style pots they came in.

I just ordered a Shiranui.   My question is...how do you pronounce it?
