Jackfruit variety "Small", any info on it?
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:47:34 PM »
At our fruit club meeting last night, I got to pick a plant off the door prize table. Only thing still there that interested me was a jackfruit (grafted), the white plastic wrap around tag at the base said "Small" as a variety, it also had a Pine Island jackfruit tag hanging from a branch.

I have never heard of a variety "Small" anybody know anything about this one? The name sounds like it would fit in with some of the other recent Fairchild releases like Hardy and Sweet.

Or possibly a Pine Island creation?

Thanks.

Got my answer from Pine Island Nursery.
It is from Fairchild, has been re-named to Mi Papi.

I picked up a Papi Fairchild from the festival last fall.  It was a good tasting, but not great jak, but the fruit doesn't get very big.  Supposed to be pretty cold-hardy.

Pine Island's reply to my question about "Small";

"Thank you for your email the Small is a Fairchild variety it has had a name change and now it is called Mi Papi , it is a small variety the fruit will weigh approximately 10-13 lb soft flesh and very sweet."

Are you kidding? There shouldn't even be a fruit with the name "papi" in it. That just sounds ridiculous.

I remember seeing a fruit label papi and a fruit labeled small. Did anyone take pictures at the jack fruit event?

Pine Island is still labeling this as "Small". I bought one thinking it was something new.  Luckily, I didn't buy papi at the jackfruit festival because of the stupid name so at least this is not a duplicate. Really, I am not sure which name is dumber.

When and where is this jackfruit festival?

Not sure when this will happen again but Fairchild hosts them every once in a while.
