Best tropical/subtropical fruit you are not growing
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:35:05 PM »
Many people are already growing Lychee and Mango and I was wondering what is the best tasting fruit we may be missing out on?  I'm specifically wondering about fruit trees that don't need ultra tropical growing conditions, something that can be grown outdoors in Florida or California without too much extra attention.  So far I've come up with:

Achachairu
Green Sapote
Jaboticaba
Chilean Guava
Maprang

ilama (Anona diversifolia) ?
cambucá (Plinia edulis) ?
monkey orange (Strychnos spinosa)?

(It would be nice if you could include the rest of the world subtropics...)

I have achachairu, green sapote and monkey orange growing outside  for a while now.
They are slow but sure can handle a bit of cold...

I think one nice fruit that I'm not growing but could perform in my place is santol.
Then there are some brazilian fruit, which are reported to be great, but I'm not growing. Jaboticaba is my only Myrciaria and so far no fruits (so far it does not grow too much. I thinks it needs more water and humididy).

Rambutan, pulasan, durian, mangosteen are mission imposible aver here..

BTW, I think maprang is overrated in this forum; it's like a mago-flavoured plum, inferior to a decent mango.
