Holiday Ideas For Fruit Tree Hoarders
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:19:24 AM »
Just thought it would be a way to spring some ideas for those of us fortunate enough to have people requesting gift ideas.

These pruners are my favorite, kind of a mix of Double-Cut and Felco-2 Design.  I have a pair that I use all the time and just ordered another for my stocking..  ;)

I will stick with my Felcos.

Of course for those that are into grafting, a well put together self made basket of quality knife and supplies would make a nice gift.

I believe in low quality pruners. Scooped up a few at the Swap Shop (big flea market here) for an average of $2.00. So I have one in my car, one by my backdoor, one by my front door. Prepositioned to use as the spirit moves me. I believe in redundancy and redundant systems. I also like old hoses. One I use is very nice but the other is old and patched up w duct tape. When it breaks up front (due to my crimping and abuse) it already has a metal (not plastic) hose mender on the squirting end. So I'll just cut off 2-3 feet and mend it again.

Also at the Swap Shop they had some brand new straight outta China pruners with handles 15" long. $5 and me like very much will post a photo

I totally agree with you Rob, the Felco-2 is a better pruner and a must have for general pruning.  The double cuts are better for cutting scions on smaller sources to preserve cadmium but slower for bigger jobs than the Felco-2's.

I go for cheap, many and redundant like an RPG, anti-tank or a Silkworm missile. Or the modern jets flying on three redundant hydraulics and wiring.

hehe. a russian fella once told me, "cheap guy pay twice." Chinese disposable pruners are fine for the occasional user, but they won't last more than a couple of days under commercial stress.

My personal favorite is the felco 11. With a sharpening once every couple of months, the felco will last a lifetime.

As far as loppers goes, my favorite is a little known brand called Vaca Shears. The commercial lemon pruners in Southern Calipornia used those. A buddy of mine who worked in the lemon orchards bought Home Cheapo's best / most expensive loppers (corona), and within one 8 hour work day, the blade was destroyed. The next day he got a pair of vaca loppers which lasted through the entire season without the slightest problem. I eventually inherited them and still use them 13 years later :-).

http://www.vacashears.com/treeshears.html I use the 34 incher with aluminum handle.

For psycho tree hoarders who garden / graft after dark, Zebra Light makes what could be the best headlight on the market, even besting petzl's much higher priced counterpart in terms of small size, flexibility, and light output. It pupes out about 4 hours of near daylight output, perfect for top working mango trees in the middle of the night. Make sure to get the 3100 mah batteries and a good charger like the Pila.

http://www.zebralight.com/H600-Cree-XM-L-750Lm-Headlamp-18650_p_72.html It comes with a head-band, not sure why it's not in the product pictures.

Jeff, sorry for dumb question, but can the sharpening be done by the owner, or does it require special equipment?

It's pretty easy to sharpen yourself. I use either a file or a stone, depending on which I can find first :-). With pruners fully open, sharpen beveled side.

the edge of a car window happens to be perfect for sharpening grafting knives!

an old grease monkey taught me the trick recently, I was amazed how well it worked.

I used to have and solely use the Felco 7, the one with the rotating handle.  It made cutting much easier and less stressful on the tree.  The problem was over time, the rotating hand would stick and eventually freeze...,maybe I was keeping them without replacement for too long.  Is 10+ years too long?

Anybody use any other of the Felcos besides the 2 and 11?

Once your trees get big enough to need annual pruning, a silky saw is a necessity. http://www.silkysaws.com

For picking früüt in your trees that are in the under 15 foot tall range, a barnel 6-10 foot telescoping cut and hold pruner is the boss: http://www.barnel.com/ultrareach.php (amazon sells them).

Ohh glad you liked them. Those silkies are professional arborist quality saws. The zubat 330 is probably the best for us fruit tree obsessionists. Not too bad at $70. SK-4 high carbon steel. When you have a reasonably sized garden, the sheath is super handy. When you're out in the yard, you want to have your felco pruners in a scabbard and your tree saw in a sheath on your belt so that you can have your hands free when climbing or doing the rounds. With my old Home Cheapo Corona saw, I had to hold the darn thing in my teeth while I climbed the larger trees to prune the higher limbs, which was a bit of a pain :-).

I have to go back and look,I saw the price for the pole saws and said wow,$70 for a quality hand saw is not bad considering most half decent ones that keep a continual edge are $40-$50,the loppers made out of aircraft aluminum for under $100 are a steal, real good bargain.

It looks like some of the Silky saws are available at Amazon, from various vendors.  Sometimes at a bit of a savings.

Whoo hoo! Good tools make for a happy tree hoarder :-). They will last forever. The only thing that eventually gave out after over a decade of use on mine was the rubber bumper, but they sell the parts separately.
