« on: February 07, 2012, 08:29:35 PM »
im ordering 3 custom lychee airlayers from Oscar and as the minimum order is 4, i will round out the order with a mango-i asked oscar for his suggestions for a good tasting mango that can fruit in a container and he suggested one of the following.
please say which you think i should choose- i like my fruit sweet but with a definite hint of acid.

Julie (dwarf), Carrie, Neelam, Golden Glow
(sometimes spelled Golden Globe), Rapoza.

Go with Golden Glow. I've never heard of it.

I am growing Julie, have not tried the fruit yet. But it has a excellent dwarf form, love the tree hoping the fruit is excellent!
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Haven't ever heard of Golden Glow, but I have heard of Golden Globe.....I think I heard some commentary about it from Ricky Gervais.....the mango expert.  I haven't had Rapoza yet, but I hear good things about it.  I have had Carrie and Julie.  Without further info, I think Julie is the best choice for you.  Especially when you consider your space limtations and your love of strong flavors.

Wow...Impressive memory! What I said there was:

The Rapoza was one of the most beautiful mangoes there. Unfortunately, I found it to be disappointing in flavor. It was "OK"...that's about all I can say for it. Now, in fairness, I was not the one that sliced it up. I intended to be the one to do it, but the host did the slicing on that particular fruit. When I do the slicing of a new cultivar, I always make sure I get an immediate taste, even if it is just a remnant of the flesh from around the seed so that I can get an impression before the fruit sits out and potentially has some degrading in flavor or quality. The fruit may have also been a day or two past its prime. Murahilin got it for me and it had been growing on the ground. The upside of the mango was gorgeous...as you can see and the underside was without color and was scarred. I would have to continue to reserve judgment on this mango until I try it further and it is still on my wish list for mangoes to plant out based upon its popularity in Hawaii, the intense color, size, meatiness, and supposed productivity.

So, I guess you could say that the expereince was not memorable for me or that I am getting old and senile....take your choice.  In any case....I am not prepared to give up on Rapoza based upon the "word" from Hawaii. My advice stands.......Julie should be your choice.

harry- wasnt my memory- I googled Rapoza and saw the post.
I decided to go with Julie. Everyone has to have a Julie!
so in a few months time, I should be the proud owner of
Hanging Green,  No Mai Tze, Emperor lychees and Julie Mango.
Really excited.
I will almost certainly have the only Hanging Green,  No Mai Tze lychee trees in NY!

Good pick with Julie, was an easy pick for me after hearing all the very positive things about the taste. My Julie is flowering now, will update with some photos of the tree if your interested. I am growing it in a 10-12 gal container, the graft was very low and stout.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

While Julie is your best bet size wise (being a dwarf), it has more of a spicy characteristic  than being acid/tart/tangy.  If you are truly looking for sweet and tangy, I would go with Golden Glow or Carrie and my personal choice would be Golden Glow since I am not a fan of Carrie.  You will have to do some creative pruning but you will need to do this in any event so you can maintain indoors and outdoors in your locale.

This photo was taken 1/16/12, when the Julie was pushing new growth.

Some photos taken 2/5/12, starting to flower

Tree had anthracnose when I received it, it eventually cleared up after about 8-10 months (cleared up probably earlier but shed all previous damaged leaves). I used a fungicide treatment, the CA weather.

Here was the tree 3 months after receiving it 10/30/10, mangoes did not hold (think it was to small and the anthracnose) tree has no problem bearing young.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Julie is nice in that it's precocious and is decent tasting. But -- it's one of the most difficult mangoes to keep healthy in a container past a 3 gallon size. It has anthracnose issues, can't tolerate too much water, is sensitive to fertilizer, needs constant micronutrient applications, etc, etc. They are finicky little trees.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned pickering. It's super easy to grow, great tasting, and as precocious as the Julie (can carry fruit to maturity in a 3 gal pot). It's also small.

Yeah, I really like both Pickering and Julie.   But I have to agree with Jeff. Pickering is an amazing tree.

Didn't mention Pickering because of minor detail......it wasn't listed as being one Oscar has available.

Lycheeluva, never even heard of Pickering. The Julie that we have here is fairly resistant to anthracnose from my observations. I've read before how Julie is prone to anthracnose in Florida, so i'm wondering if it's even the same exact Julie? In any case, it's a perfect mango for growing and fruiting in a pot because it never gets large, and the fruit is quite good. The only down side i think is that Julie might take a long time to form good ball of roots. Never air layered it before but they tend to grow a lot slower than other mangos.

guess ill get my mango trees from FL.
As a side note, whatever Pickering's virtues are, imaginative naming is not one of them. Whereas "Julie" brings up images of young blondes on a summer's day, pickering brings up images of a young boy with a runny nose.

:-) Pickering is named after Wayne Pickering - a friend of Gary Zill. Mr Pickering is an older fella in his early 60's with a six pack and a passion for mangoes :-).
