Citrus General Discussion / Re: What to plant outside - 7B?
« on: April 24, 2014, 06:48:25 AM »
If you are expecting winter lows of 5-10F, then I doubt even the most hardy varieties on your list will thrive without protecting them in winter.   Having said that, you should be able to grow everything on your list... It is only dependent on how much effort you are willing spend protecting them.  If you do not want to protect them you could think about trying some of the poncirus hybrids (eg Dunstan, Thomasville, etc...), but they probably won't taste as good. Also it sounds like you have plenty of space to put up a decent size high tunnel, so you could go that route.

Hi Frank, it's good to see you've migrated over here.  Any signs of growth on your trees yet?  My satsuma and mandarin are flushing right now, but I haven't removed their protection... I think I might try to do it later today as it looks like I'm finally past any serious danger of frost.   My Thomasville, which was outside unheated, has been uncovered for 3-4 weeks, but hasn't broken dormancy yet.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Where to buy citrus online (USA)
« on: April 22, 2014, 02:55:03 PM »
Here's a list of several online vendors for citrus in the USA (as of April 2014).  Many of the vendors are well known and top notch (a few are/were active members of the Citrus Growers Forum), the reliability of others may be questionable.  Please feel free to comment regarding your experiences with these (or other) vendors.

If you are uncertain of the vendor, I would recommend contacting them first via email/phone to verify they have the tree you want in stock and that they can ship to your location. The Garden Watchdog (http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/#b) is also a good place to check before ordering.  Please be aware, there are many Federal restrictions on interstate (and even intrastate) shipment of citrus, if you are in a state with a commercial citrus industry, many of these vendors will not be able to ship trees to you.

Here's the list, in no particular order:

Madison Citrus Nursery   https://madisoncitrusnursery.com/

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted: Gold Nugget Mandarin

Millet, let me know how the Bayflora tree turns out.  I haven't ordered anything from Bayflora, but did have a few conversations with them last year, they were quite knowledgeable, and even recommended trying Fourwinds since they did not have any of the Gold Nuggets in stock.  I like that they graft their trees on to FD rootstock... there are few places that do this as a general rule.

I have ordered from them in the past (with trepidation), as they were the only source I could find for the variety I was interested in.  I personally did not have any issues, and the tree was of good size for the price.

However, they certainly have had problems in the past with illegal interstate shipments of citrus.  From what I understand, Lemoncitrustree is broker that serves as a middleman between large wholesale growers and consumers.  I believe that they now will only ship trees in Florida that originate from FL nurseries.

I'm not a big fan of their gimmicky marketing.... free growers pot and soil; a $20 value.... yeah right.
In ordering from any online vendor that you are unfamiliar with, I would highly recommend calling/emailing the first to make sure they have the tree available for immediate delivery.   If anything seems fishy, then don't order.

If you decide to order from them, I would recommend going through Amazon.com, as they have a store there.  This should give you more protection should something go wrong.

Wow, looking good!  With all of those seedlings, are you planning on grafting?

Greg, I guess it does look a bit intimidating!  Logees has these weird custom made tables designed to fit their 4 inch pots.  It would look even more intimidating if you could see the top of the table.  The tables consist of several parallel square metal bars spaced just right so that the 4 inch pots will fit in between and will be suspended by the bars just a few inches above the corrugated metal bottom of the table you can see in the picture.

As an added note, the ponderosa lemon on the right is just a small corner of the 110+ year old tree planted inside one of  the greenhouses.

Millet, I hope your Gold Nugget turns out well!  My Gold Nugget (from Four Winds) that I have planted outside is getting ready to flower soon. I probably would have gone with the tree from Bayflora when I got mine last year as they were on FD... but Bayflora (and Logees) were out of stock when I ordered.

Millet,
Bayflora.com has Gold Nuggets in stock, they are all on FD rootstock, but are rather expensive ~$70.  The grafted trees from Logee's are not that bad, they are generally about the same size as the $20 FourWinds (or Harris Citrus) trees.  The main difference is that they will be root bound in their 4" pots, but the overall canopy size and root mass are relatively similar in my experience. Here's a pic of one of the Logee's 4" pot grafted trees (I don't remember which variety this is... either Gold Nugget or Vaniglia Sanguigno). The picture is from this past winter.  The Logee's trees that are rooted cuttings are much more hit and miss regarding their size... some of those are quite small.

Lucky you!  The selection of finger limes available in the US is currently quite limited.  Although I do believe that Byron Sunrise and Rainforest Pearl are working their way through the budwood screening program in Florida for eventual introduction.... but who knows how many years it will take.  Of the finger limes you have, are there any noticeable differences in flavor, or are they all about the same?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: April 14, 2014, 07:19:23 AM »
Hello everyone, I am arriving from the Citrus Growers Forum. Let me introduce myself. I primarily grow citrus, but have a few other "tropical" things (at least for zone 6B Massachusetts  ;D) that I'm growing. Over the years I've killed a my share of Mango, Lychee, and Avocado trees....  I currently have around 25 different varieties of citrus. Four of these trees are planted outside in my coastal Massachusetts yard.  I will be adding two or three more trees outside this season.  These trees receive varying degrees of protection in the winter.  I also am growing a few of the more hardy varieties of Pomegranate out in my yard and have six or seven fig varieties, two of which are outside.
