Mystery Latin American Seedling
« on: November 13, 2020, 10:45:18 PM »
A goose incident where a bird accessed  a forbidden zone and pulled out id tags from germinating fruit trees has caused problems. 50 or so species shuffled, really tested me but there were errors.

This one has me perplexed and I just can't identify it. Does it ring any bells with anyone? I put the wrong tag in the pot.

I don't think its manilkara or pouteria, nor does it have an Annona growth habitat. At the time I hade a bunch of Brazilian, Ecuadorian and Mexican seeds popping up.It is not Garcinia, gustavia, meliccocus, talisia, a jaboticaba, typical Eugenia or anything mainstream I think and I only has one.

Mammea americana is what I thought at first glance. Red new growth and ruffled leaves do not fit the tree I have. Maybe a variation or different species of mammea.

Looks like Mammea Americana to me. It's a member of the Guttiferea family I believe so a relative of mangosteen.

I have grown a few M.americana seedlings before and this is quite different.

Did you have any seeds of Licania, Sunsa, Sunsapote?  I haven't seen one for a long time;  not sure.

I grow what’s called sonsapote in CR and the leaves don’t look like that.  They are longer and narrower, very similar to mango foliage really.
The reason I suggested manilkara is because I have a seedling that looks similar to the photo that is labeled as such.  I got it from Gary Zill who says he got it from Alan Carl.
I have a photo ready to post but the image app is not working for me right now with either of my devices.

So this is the seedling I’m referring to.  Does anyone know about this?

Alan Carle got a lot of things from the Amazon region.  There is a huge tree in the forest, with edible fruits, and the wood, known as massaranduba, is used for river boat keels, as it handles collisions with floating tree trunks very well:  Manilkara huberi.  I have never seen the foliage.

The one I have simply says manilkara sp.
I also have from that same source two landolphia which are growing like crazy, have flowered, but not set fruit so far.  This stuff is about 3 years old.

I have seen Alan Carle's place and nothing matched his really. Anyway positive ID may be more challenging than I suspected.

So you don’t see a resemblance between your plant and mine.  Have you seen a manilkara anything like what’s in my photo?

Yes actually I do see it now and you could be right Peter. Was having a technical issue with my computer and it restricted a few things and I couldn't scrutinise the pic closely before.

Can't help with the i.d., but I CAN vouch for the fact that unattended toddlers can wreak the same havoc with name tags as geese can, but the grandkids are oh so much cuter than the geese!!!
