When to Top a Avocado tree
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:28:01 PM »
I just received some special Avocado tree’s I had grafted for me 3 years ago. They are Kahaluu avocados. I want to be able to keep these trees at about 10-12 feet tall, 15 the tallest. Does anyone know when should I top or Plug these trees to keep them low.
I also have a Joey and a Mexicola Granda avocado that I want to keep low also.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Joe.

just after harvest,  so as to give it time to recover before the next bloom.

How big are the trees .If you are not going to let them fruit this year, then after there is no chance of a freeze. A picture of the trees would help.

I prune mine all the time all year. I live in a different climate though.

I think it depends on the profile of the tree as it grows up, approaching the height you want.  With one of my Kahaluus, I didn't prune it at all until it was about 12-15 ft. tall, then pruned all of the upward growing branches.  It hasn't grown any taller since then, which was at least 5 years ago.   My favorite avocado, so far.

I have topped mine late summer/early fall without any issues.
