When it comes to overrated mangos.. personally I think lemon zest is the absolutely most overrated mango (blasphemy right? :) )

Per what he's looking for NDM is a great fit. And re the heavy criticism above..many people like myself who have tasted all the newer varieties and grow many of them for years ..still absolutely love a good NDM and don't  just eat them because other people say they should.

Mine were fantastic this year, and not every ripe NDM is only sugary sweet...mine had some complexity this season especially the later ones which had some acidity and rose notes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangoes purchased from neighbors

Dosent look like Haden to me either. I've been enjoying some random seedlings mangoes picked in the Coral Gables area that my co-worker has been giving me. Thought very fibrous, they have been very sweet with that classic mango flavor- and seemingly bullet proof to anthrac spots. Sad to say even killing some bland Pickerings I've been having from my pampered tree in Broward this season. I wish there was a way to have a Mango Seedling competition.

Yes seedling competition that would be great. My parents super old Haden tree’s season is almost over, besides the jelly seed when you pick fruit right they are amazing not only in looks but in taste.

So looking for other sources now since my parents tree is out, my trees are too young, and Lemon zest only tree with fruit is still not ripe. So I’ve been buying from neighbors, have my eye on one who sells Valencia prides from what has to be the biggest tree I’ve seen, but they aren’t ripe yet.

Nice backsplash

Mango trees flower and fruit throughout the year in Jamaica.
With the summer months being the heavy season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Total Mango Harvest From 2018

If these are your own trees, is there a reason why you harvested them so early?

Yeah...The Pickerings seem especially green.. they look several weeks from read to pick imo.

Great haul tho!

Do these look ok to pick from the tree now and let them fully color up in the kitchen?  We have a few squirrels around (and random gardeners) and I'd hate to lose one of the 3 mango's I have from my Pickering.

I'd give it a few more days to get rid of some of the remaining green.. when they look like that ..3-5 days should be enough to turn it fully yellow ..

and as said above, they should take literally no effort to pick when ripe ..the slightest move of the fruit's stem should make it come off in your hand when ripe.

Of course if the squirrels are eyeing it up (luckily I don't have any in my subdivision) you can pick it now and it should still ripen up well after a few days (based on the pics).

So lots of flowers and no fruit set...took advice and didnt hand pollinate.

As long as your tree is big enough to hold fruit I'd absolutely start hand pollinating. For me my Dream from Wayne on Dream seedling roots hasn't done great with natural fruit set. That could partially be because I've got it a little crowded with other trees nearby, but a Gefner I've got in similarly crowded conditions definitely sets a higher percentage on its own. Even with varieties that set well on their own, hand pollination is still recommended because you will tend to get more complete pollination which means larger fruit.

Ok some more flowers are coming along, so will try...and yeah the tree is plenty big enough.

Just to be clear ..my photo was of an iman passand

61
TnT.. are you seeing enough break of yellow here?
Put the cup next to it for scale..tree flowered in early Feb if I remember right.

I only have 4 on the tree so I'm being cautious with timing picking.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: High rainfall == Low brix?

Yes. I think the fruit will start to sweeten up in the next couple of weeks.

I think a lot of hot, sunny summer weather will eventually improve the quality of the fruit.  Summer hasn't even begun yet so have faith!  (But yes, an early Angie and an early Pickering were both not too sweet.)

I'm still about 3 weeks to a month before any of my trees are ready to harvest ...hopefully a more normalized summer pattern over the next month vs the wet May we've had will make a difference for me when I pick.

I dont think you need to rush to think anything yet...the fruit are small and not weighing down the tree at this point, and the tree will likely drop what it cant hold..and given this is obviously a very young tree..if you end up with handful after it drops naturally, that's good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Sapodilla Flowers

Pretty excited to see my Alano Sapodilla starting to flower here in South Florida.  Seems a bit late in the season for its first flowers. Hopefully in a couple weeks or months I’ll have some fruit.

Not late really...they cah flower almost anytime throughout the year..mine are flowering now also..and holding mature fruit and some younger fruit as well.

Bumping this... should we have any concerns with the predicted 8 or so inches of rain over the next couple days ..with mangoes a couple weeks from harvest ready ?

For those with ripe mangoes...is flavor washed out with all the rain in May in south Florida?

68
I'll take some pics in the morning of the fruit.

Hey my maha is bearing for the first time, and my iman pass and has fruited once before but the birds got the couple fruit on the tree then (now its loaded).

Any advice on when to harvest these two varieties would be greatly appreciated.

70
I throw all my early drops into the mulch around my trees..certainly doesnt hurt...not sure if it helps all that much.

71
Thanks for the input ..so I wont hand pollinate then.

I saw some fruit flies working an open flower...that's good right?

72
So my dream has a full bloom for the first time..

Should I hand polinante or not? Tried a couple but they didnt take.

Echoing the tip above about getting rid of that thick grass...for such a young tree that's an issue. If you're mulching properly you really shouldn't have that much an issue with weeding...at least not in the way you're describing.

74
How would you describe it...taste fiber etc.
That shape is pretty cool.

Awesome mango on the island.

The only places I've heard them struggle is in high altitude areas like Mandeville. Julie at lower elevations in Jamaica is problem free from my experience...and has multiple crops throughout the year (of course summer is the best) including a Christmas crop.

I have an uncle in Coconut Creek with a maybe 15 year old Julie...its the only FL Julie I've had that tastes like the authentic Jamaican/Caribbean Julie.
