Anyone have experience growing Green Sapote in California?
« on: February 15, 2015, 06:52:31 PM »
My grafted Green Sapote arrived a few days ago from TopTropicals. Right now it's in a pot to recover from shipping, but soon enough I'll be planting it. Has anyone gotten it to fruit successfully here? Mine seems very healthy at the moment (but some plants take a while to recover from shipping) although the graft looks ugly to me, but I don't know anything about grafting. The plant has five branches - the central leader and four others symmetrically around it. Exceptionally well-formed for a mail order plant.

Tom in El Cerrito has gotten it to fruit:

Tom's an expert CRFGer but he's working with El Cerrito's cool / foggy climate.  So I'm sure you'll be fine in San Diego.

I have one that grows and fruits real nice a couple of miles from the coast in South San Diego. The leaves show a little cold stress during the cold.

What do you suppose is the cold tolerance?

That's great to hear, marklee, since you're near me. How frequently do you water it when it's hot (like it is now)? During what months does it produce ripe fruit? Can you post photos?

you know - they don't care here too much as long as it is not below 32F. even after a week of 40s at the noon there is no damage
