diospyros and garcinia/rheedia hybrids?
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:22:25 PM »
I am germinating seeds of a few species of each of these seeds and wondered if there are any hybrids out there. These plants are generally dioecious and a few members here grow them in close proximity. It gives scope for some unusual combinations. Maybe lucs × imbe or lucs by achacha etc. The same for diospyros  maybe decandra x texana and the rest. Anyone come across this?

My wife and I hope do some experiments with Diospyros spp. Already grow texana, kaki, dygina, mespiliformis, lycioides, vaccinioides, blancoi, crassiflora  1-2 years seedlings. Decandra and montana still shipping to us.
Somebody in Australia grows unusual Persimmon?
Such as: http://foodslink.jp/syokuzaihyakka/syun/fruit/kaki-Kuro.htm
http://item.rakuten.co.jp/hana-online/kaki_kurokaki_03/
Is it hybrids?
Is it possible tropical and subtropical (evergreen and decidious) Diospyros spp crosses?

Garcinia livingstonei (and others African) are closer to Rheedia spp (Achacha, Luc's...) or to Garcinia spp (Mangosteen, Mundu, Russel's...)?
Some hybrids could make a splash! It remains only to get them...   ;)

D. virginiana X D. kaki is known as Nikita's Gift and as Rosseyanka. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for but it's being sold as cold hardy alternative of Japanese Persimmon.

Yup exactly that sort of thing, if people are growing different species there would have to be some odd hybrids about. Im planning a few when my trees reach flowering/fruiting age.

There is a lot of D. virginiana X D. kaki especially from Crimea.
For example my good friend  Mr. Cernoch from Czech Republic has 12 different hybrid persimons for sale on his nursery page:

Has anyone seen hybrid garcinia? I would like to see some cold tolerant fruits bred and am thinking imbe x lucs or possibly imbe x achacha. My imbe's dont blink in the perth cold and they're only  2 ft tall. Id like to combine that with a bigger fruit.

Really, there is a lot of D. virginiana X D. kaki. This cross isnt problem, both species are decidious and subtropical. Usually do it for cold tolerant cultivars.
Maybe we can make hot tolerant Persimmon cultivar, that dont need cold dormancy.
Need to cross D. kaki with some of the tropical Diospyros spp.

Druss,
decandra fruit season just started in Thai and VietNam. You can buy this fresh seeds on Ebay right now.
Can you tell us when the fuit season of Australian Diospyros spp., especially D. australis?
What species are decidious and what are evergreen?

I`m also very interested in Diospyros hybrids. Are their any successful crosses besides the Kaki x virginia hybrids?
@ Alex: Are you interested in the black/blue Kuro Gaki Kaki? There are some sources in Europe, for example

Druss,
decandra fruit season just started in Thai and VietNam. I just received already sprouted (in wet coir sawdust) seeds, purchased on Ebay from Yuwalak Samol.
Tell me please when the Diospyros australis fruit season? Will you access to some seeds?
It is evergreen?
