Great pics of your grafts Adam, I get seedling coming up all over the place here because of scrub jays planting them and oaks. Loquat's make nice big shrub like trees if you don't prune them and they very hardy. Going to move some seedlings down on my north edge of property to help with wind break. Thanks for posting pics and your experience with grafting them. 8)

This first pic, is of my largest "Torrey" loquat...from the cocktail tree.

I was very pleased with the flavor, there was minimal acidity, and a very nice pear/loquat taste.  Definitely one of my favorites!

here is another smaller fruit from the same tree, that I peeled and ate...

here are some larger Tori's from the mother tree (found out today this is proper spelling, not Torrey).

The shape is different than most loquats I see...they're round like an apple

thanks Oscar.  It's a Central FL cultivar, and it hasn't been propagated too much until now.  I think it will be a great selection for those who want a large, low acid fruit.  I think they can get even larger if you thin out 90% of fruits...and show the tree some attention.  The large fruits in my photo came from a totally neglected tree.

Yeah, if you thin them out they will probably get twice that size. The hawaiifruit.net site has a great explanation page on how to thin loquat fruits.

Finally got to taste the Avri loquat.  I didn't thin the tree, and the fruits were medium sized...not huge...so I'm sure the size will increase with thinning...and not to mention, my tree is rootbound...and suffered from wilting leaves as a result of me forgetting to water it, while it was holding fruits...So i'm surprised it held as many as it did.

After the fruits develop a deep orange color...they're ready to consume....I usually peel loquats, but I find myself eating the skin on this variety....the taste is very much like an apricot....and this is by far the sweetest loquat cultivar I've tasted so far.  The fruits have about 2-4 small seeds...and the flesh is very firm....I suppose this is one of the most popular commercial cultivars in Israel because the fruits hold up well for shipping, and the taste is so sweet!

Nice looking fruit Adam! I think loquats are really a neglected fruit that is worthy of more selection for superior fruit!

Adam, do you have any cocktail loquat trees at the moment?

Access to scions this time of year?

What other types of loquat do you grow?

Adam,

I'm glad to hear the "Avril" is a winner. I grafted up a few from the last spring along with the "Feluchi", have you had a fruit from that yet?

Jim Neitzel has a few that he has grown out that are pretty tasty. Thanks for the update.

Has anyone here heard of a loquat cultivar called Supreme? I tried researching this name and came up with zilch, but a local guy claims he bought a tree by this name years ago and has been grafting them and has some for sale.

Adam, When will you have some available?

for local pick up?

maybe in 2-4 weeks?

but they will just be pushing out of the grafting tape, not totally healed but well on their way....I can give a slight discount at this stage.

I'm guessing it will be at least 2 months before they're totally healed.

The cocktail trees are not exactly a care free tree....you must constantly balance the canopy...and keep track of all the varieties, and where the graft unions are.

but it's well worth it in my opinion, even if some of the scions aren't as productive as others some years...at least you have all that variety on one tree!  and an extended season.

Loquats can be grafted onto pear and quince right?

from what i heard quince has a dwarfing effect on loquats, but never actually tried it myself.

I was told you are the guy to go to for loquat scions.

I purchased a supposed Wolfe, but turns out it is a seedling.  I'd like to take advantage of the beautiful tree though, and add varieties to it.

What do you recommend?

out of my collection I'd say go for Avri, Tori, Novak, Xmas, and Aiden.

also have Puppelo (white flesh variety, excellent acid sweet balance, medium size fruit)

vista white (white flesh, very sweet)

still waiting on my Peluche to fruit...ive sold scions and now the scions are flowering, but my mother tree hasn't flowered...the leaves are very large, deeply serrated, and the fruit is supposed to be a beast...bigger than any other loquat i've seen...but I have yet to see for myself...scions are available though.

Aiden has been highly requested, I need to gather scions...my only tree is too small to get scions from.  I'm hoping to get some scions asap..and pics of the mother tree with fruits...its holding a nice crop now..it's the largest fruited cultivar i've seen to date in person.

I tried grafting 4 loquats. The only one loquat that took was the one that I left the bottom leaves on the original rootstock. All the loquats I removed the leaves on are just stagnant 3 months later. Not even pushing out new leaves.... :-[

Anyone had similar experience?
