Someone sent me a Autumn Olive a couple of years ago.
at least they think it is Autumn olive.
The plants were there when they bought the property
its North of New Orleans on a few acres.
If anyone can confirm or deny the species, i would greatly appreciate it.
I am also wondering if i can graft to it ?
i have 3 healthy plants, it would be nice to have autumn olive, Russian olive, Goumi and silverberry as well...
====================
I often use PFAF to search for info on plants.
it looks like latifolia is indeed the best Elaeagnus for warm weather areas.
some, like Russian olive, are for zones 2-7, and i am guessing wont fruit in the deep South.
PFAF isnt perfect, but, it has more info for me that is easy to access.
If you do a search for Elaeagnus it comes up with 23 or so varieties
all have edibility rating (im guessing this is mostly taste ?)
Elaeagnus latifolia - Bastard Oleaster
hardiness zone : 8-11
to do a search for all type (or paste) Elaeagnus into the search bar... (top right)
http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Elaeagnus+latifolia----------
here are the ones listed as edibility of "5" (highest)
Elaeagnus cordifolia
Elaeagnus macrophylla
Elaeagnus multiflora -Goumi,
Elaeagnus multiflora ovata -Goumi
Elaeagnus pungens - Oleaster, Silverberry,
Elaeagnus x ebbingei Elaeagnus
