Cherimoyas in San Diego
« on: February 25, 2017, 11:55:17 PM »
I just purchased 5 lbs of Cherimoyas from a small scale farmer in Fallbrook, CA.  The seller had no idea what variety she grows.  That got me wondering, does anyone know of a place that sells Cherimoyas of known variety in San Diego?  I would like to try named cultivars (and sadly I was out of town and missed the tasting event at the SCREC).  Thanks!

The farmers market in Hillcrest sells Cherimoya and Barry Koral sells them there.  If he is selling that day he knows the variety he has available.  Typically Booth, Nata, Pierce, and an unnamed variety that is very good.  The farmers market in Linda Vista also sells Cherimoya, most are unnamed, but I did get a chance to try a Selma there.

Thanks!  I went to the Hillcrest FM today and got some Pierce cherimoyas.  Usually, all you can find at other FM's are Booth and Dr. White.  Booth has good flavor but often very seedy to the point of not being worth it.

You are really too late for the superior varieties.   November December and into January are your when your best varieties are available.

And last time I check there were plenty of top tier cherimoyas left in San Diego...especially from some North San Diego growers
