Tropical Fruit Discussion / sf bay area backyard tropical fruit trees
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:57:11 PM »
Almost guava season here in sf bay area.  asian white Guava tree is loaded. maybe about 100+ fruits.  I will thin them next time as the fruits are small because of the abundant of fruits on it.  Last year, there was 3 fruits and they were size of a softball.

i'm on ebates.com website trying to look for coupons and in-instore cash back for major online nursery.  I see can't find any.  How many people would be interested to trying to get ebates.com to add nursery affiliates into their product?   I can try get them to put some efforts into adding more hobbyist merchants that are target for us?

So I went to SF chinatown this weekend.  And the price for cherimoya and yellow dragon fruit in SF chinatown was so shocking. I was like WTF???!!!!!
$9.99/lb for cherimoya and yellow dragon fruit!!!!   I'm clearing away all the flowers and useless trees on the premise and planting a few more cherimoya trees.
Those trees are so easy to grow, they grow like weeds at my place. even the 1yr old seedlings can withstand the winter out in the open without any issues.   My plan is to sale cherimoya stand  out in the frontyard once the 30+ trees start to give fruits.  I hardly even water the trees throughout the year.  very easy to maintain.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / my mango fruit split into half vertically

my mango fruit split into half vertically. fruit is about 3inchs long. Should I harvest it or let it continue growing?

finally tasting the first fruit from my anon seedling, this fruit is from a second seedling that was planted 6-7yrs ago. It's flavor is so unique.  It's a bit acidic with sweetness and very flavorful like a sugar apple, and the texture is sectional and chewy like sugar apple but is creaming like cherimoya. Not sandy or gritty at all.   I think I might have cross pollinated this cherimoya with a sugar apple. It does have lots of seeds like a sugar apple. It is a keeper. I think I like it more than a regular cherimoya because it tastes so unique.

my seedling cherimoya finally after 7yrs is starting to give fruits. I don't know variety.  Last year, I cross pollinated with several different other trees onto it. So, as you can see , some fruits do look different than others. There were about 30 fruit , but rats/squirrel went after it while it was thumb size. There are now only 10 on the tree. Tree is in front of house under the palm tree.    Have not tasted yet. Mom will be here tomorrow, I will pick one for her to try. She said back then that "she'll be dead by the time the trees are fruiting".  She'll be the first to taste it.  It does look really good.

does this look like alphonso mango tree to you? Just took this picture today. Love the different colors.  It looks different then the other alphonso I have. The two don't look the same at all.

Almost done after one year.  I build the foundation with several layers of concrete in part to give it more heights and better stabiliity.   Got a few more things to do, but decide to put a few mango tree and some plant inside yesterday to test it.  There is very good airflow with all the windows and doors opened when it is hot. I noticed that at night it is a bit warmer inside, however, still not finish putting up glass on one of the door yet, still waiting for glass block to finish it up.
This sunday will be 91F, we'll see how the plants inside will take it. Love the quality of this product. They got the gasket(weather strips) to help make it air tight. This is critical as some of those tropical plants will die when cold air leaking thru during the winter cold months. support customer service is awesome too.  Very easy to put it together yourself, but the dome on the roof is the hardest, spent about a week on it. My only complaints is that it's not big enough for 20+ mango trees. Need to get a larger one for the swimming pool too.
My dog and I look forward to spending most of our time in their during the  winter day tosoak in some heat. And watch the rains falling onto the glasses.

special chair, for my dog to watch over the mango trees during the day while I go to work when doors are open and unlock.
