Cassabanana - How long before flowering and fruiting?
« on: May 24, 2015, 04:08:53 AM »
Hi to all

I can't find anywhere info on how long it takes before a cassabanana has any flowers or starts fruiting.  Can someone help me on that?

Thanks

mine are groqwing very slowly.
i have 3 plants in different areas, none are longer than 3ft
they are at least 2 months old.
one is in a raised bed in the front yard
the other 2 are the back in native soil.
i cant figure why they are so slow...

i read it takes at least 3 months
http://plant-zone.blogspot.com/2012/02/cassabanana-sicana-odorifera-update.html

but, thats just someones blog...
no telling  how accurate it is

i know they need HOT weather
its in the 80s here for several weeks now.

Ours one took almost a year or so..if I remember correctly.
It's really takes over if you let it.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Our cassabananas started growing very well and we were hoping they would start to flower.  We had 4 plants in 2 big pots.  Then we got a new puppy (boxer) and he decided that they will help him with his new teeth.  He chewed all the cassabananas off just above the ground.

When we plant our new cassabananas, we will have to make a plan so that he can't get to it.

Well
One of my plants took off running.
Its about 8 ft growing up  a fence
the other hasnt moved. its still 1ft long...
i wonder if it needs a special relationship with the Mychorizea ?
like a nitrogen fixer or bean /

My papaya sometimes do this.
They can grow very slow, until they hit a point
Ive wondered if they are growing roots, or, they just happen to hit a pocket of nutrients, or water ?
Although sometimes i give them water and ferts, and still nothing.
then... BAM... all of a sudden, they take off.

FruitAddict, i know about the dog
mine is on lizard patrol every time we go outside.
she tears through any seedlings, ground-cover, or vine.
ive lost quite a few. i put tomato stakes up everywhere
but she gets through them.

Greenman62, my dog also got hold of a cherimoya that was about a metre high.  Today he decided that we need pepino cuttings.

Last week we moved most of our plants to an area we can close of with a electric fence that is specific for pets.  I know the dogs got in once, but I haven't seen any signs that they've been there again.

Here is mine, it has about 5 months and started flowering about 3.5 months after planting. It is growing in an Orange tree, I've already pruned it many times as it's a very agressive vine.

mine has a very similar looking "trunk"
at the base of the vine.
i have 2 now, both have a good 30ft worth of vine
neither has produced as much as 1 flower
