I bought a 7 gallon grafted peach cobbler mango tree few months back and planted it in the ground. It had flushed couple of times after that. Recently I noticed that the bark on one side of the trunk is dried up and peeling off.

Tree (7' tall)Damaged trunk

As it is very unlikely for the bark to grow back and cover the trunk, I would imagine that the weakened trunk won't be able to support the canopy as the tree grows big. So I am planning to grow some seedlings this season and graft the peach cobbler by taking scion from this tree.

I was also wondering if approach grafting would help in this situation. If I plant one or two seeds in the ground close to the trunk of the peach cobbler, once they sprout and grow, keep the best of those seedlings and let it grow and once it catches up somewhat with the trunk size of the peach cobbler, attempt approach grafting. Do you think this will work? I have no prior experience in grafting, but hoping to learn it soon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fairchild farm visit and mango tasting
« on: June 07, 2015, 11:45:53 AM »
Collier fruit growers club had a field trip organized to Fairchild farm and fruit and spice park on 06/04/2015, Thursday. At Fairchild farm, Noris Ledesma was very kind to give us a mango tasting and a quick tour of the farm. Following were the mangoes we tasted.

After that we visited Fruit and spice park and that was uneventful. Except for some Lychees, there weren't any remarkable fruits for tasting. All those Lychee trees with mature fruits in and around the park was remarkable though, this was my first time seeing Lychee trees loaded with mature fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Your fruit tree suggestions for SWFL
« on: October 18, 2014, 09:31:52 PM »
I have planted some fruit trees I am familiar with (mango, jackfruit, sugar apple, sapote, guava, papaya, pomegranate, banana). Also planted some that I am not that familiar with (lychee, atemoya, white sapote). Do you have any other favorites that grows and produces well in south west Florida that you consider as a must have?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruned Kent mango tree
« on: September 12, 2014, 05:33:09 PM »
Now that the fruits are over and new growth started appearing, cut the top off to make it shorter and wider. I hope I did not go too crazy :-\. What do you think?
