Title: Indian Mango season 2017 has begun!
Post by: simon_grow on March 19, 2017, 05:41:05 PM
I'm a big fan of Indian Mangos and every year I eagerly wait for the announcement I get through email that Indian Mango season is almost upon us. According to the email I received, it should begin in about three weeks or around the week of April 11. The email said that the mangos are expected to ripen a week or two early this year. It also mentioned that there will be 3 US inspectors visiting India and Bangalore is a new province where Mangos will be harvested and shipped from.

There will be the usual suspects like Alphonso, Kesar, Chaunsa, White Chaunsa, Neelam, Mallika, Imam Passand, Langra, Dussehri, Ratol, Banganpalli along with some varieties I've yet to try like Rasalu, Sindhri Mancurad, Ratte Wala, Totapurri and Mulgova.

I believe I have read that reports out of Florida that Mulgova is an excellent tasting mango and I have definitely heard from my Indian friends that it is in fact a very excellent tasting fruit so hopefully the shipments will not disappoint.

Last year, the shipments of Kesar were absolutely amazing. The physical appearance of the fruit were blemish free and the internal qualities matched its appearance. Kesar was THE BEST Indian Mango last year in my opinion. It easily beat out Alphonso which was good but had internal breakdown issues and was not as sweet as the Kesar. The Alphonso may be one point higher than Kesar when comparing pure Indian Resin, Turpentine, flavor but Kesar wins out for overall taste.

The Kesars last year were in a league of its own with an excellent acid balance. Actually, it's not really acid balance as it was not Tart at all but there was something definitely there that the Alphonso did not have.

If you see Indian Mangos in the markets, please post here to notify the rest of us Indian Mango fanatics and please post pictures and flavor descriptions if possible. The Indian Mangos are supposed to start shipping in about three weeks but this is only if you pre ordered through one of the companies. For many of us waiting for Indian Mangos to show up in the local Indian Supermarkets, it can be a long ways off before we can satisfy our craving.

The Florida Mulgoba is outstanding, but a different mango than the one found in India. It likely grew from the rootstock after the actual Mulgoba tree brought from India was killed back in a series of freezes.

Does the Haden's heritage come from the Mulgoba?

Does the Haden's heritage come from the Mulgoba?

Yes, Haden is a cross between Mulgoba and Turpentine. But not the Mulgoba found in India, a different Mulgoba.

You can pre order mangos from Mangozz.com but the quality can be hit or miss. I've had excellent and horrible mangos from them but the customer service was pretty good about refunds or replacement mangos. I order special varieties from them and prefer to pick up the more common varieties like Alphonso and Kesar from Miramar Cash and Carry. They also sell Pakistani mangos as well.

Simon - have you ever had a Bombay?  My tree is a fast grower and I should have at least a dozen or so
this year.  Last year it was outstanding, I mean really good.  Perhaps my desert climate is the key but it
was amazing....

I really want to find scions for Rasalu. My mother said that was her favorite growing up.

I am out of root stock right now though. :-[

Hey Gary, welcome back. Yes, I've had Bombay before, in fact, I sampled it at your place during one of the dessert mango tastings. I thought Bombay was really good but felt that Kesar was exceptional. I have a small graft of Kesar on my multigraft Manilla so I can bring you a scion next time I visit if you are interested.

I forgot to mention that the fruit/seeds from India are irradiated and they will not likely sprout, perhaps I was doing something wrong but I have 0 seedlings still alive from irradiated fruit. When irradiated seeds are soaked, they will swell a bit making it appear that they are growing but they eventually just stop. It could have been me so please let me know if anyone has any luck sprouting seeds that have been irradiated.

For my Indian Mango seedlings, I use seeds from locally grown Indian varieties like, Alphonso, Mallika, Bombay.

I have never tasted or even seen a Rasalu mango so I might try ordering a box this year. I'm so excited about this Mango season!!!

Really enjoying your posts, Simon. You have truly immersed yourself in the mango world.

If the mangoes shipped from India are irradiated, does that mean that they are not given the heat treatment that negatively impacts mangoes shipped from Mexico and Central America?

I suspect that my area in Florida does not have Indian stores that sell such a range of mangoes, but I'm going to look around.

From seed, no.

If grafted, the only one that may work with some extended success is Imam Pasand.

Thanks Mangomandan,

I believe it's either/or so if it's been irradiated, then it's not hot water treated but this is only my assumption. The Irradiation does not seem to affect the flavor at all, I can't really see how the flavor of last years Kesars can get any better. Delayed shipments definitely affect the quality of the fruit however. Sometimes a shipment will be delayed while it is waiting for inspection. This delay caused a shipment of Chaunsa and white Chaunsa to get over ripe last year or the year before.

Box turtle, the mid season Kesars were the best. The early ones were slightly less sweet and the last shipments of Kesars were a bit overripe.

There is a large Indian supermarket called Patel's in the same outdoor mall as the Walmart at University and Oakland Park Blvd in Broward County Florida. To the left of Walmart and further away from University

I never bother with imported Indian mangoes but I will take a look at Patel's this year.
I was at Patel's last week. Bought fresh turmeric root @$4/lb and planted some. Fresh ginger root is always low priced there. As low as 50˘  /lb last summer. Last time it was at $1.29.

Office Depot store was there previously.
btw  those Indian owned motels and hotels in America are mostly owned by Patels (last name). Patel is a caste or sub-caste in India

Patel Brothers is the Publix equivalent of Indian foods. This franchise has been expanding rapidly and even though they are all the way in sunrise it is usually worth the drive.

They have all the different kinds of exotic stuff available along with a fresh selection of vegetables and fruits.
The most important distinction from other small Indian food stores is the organization, cleanliness and selection of different products available. Everything available is fresh and they rarely have something missing.

Today we needed three products that I was pretty sure would be difficult to find yet we were able to get all three at Patel Brothers.
If you need anything related to Indian food this is the place to visit. The staff is extremely cordial and helpful and they make sure that you get everything you are looking for.

Simon,  lets share info here as Indian mangoes hit our shelves in local markets, this would alert all.

On side note, Kesar was the best mango I ever tasted, hands down! it beat Sweet Tart at its peak. Kesar can stay firm and wrinkle yet not turn mushy for 3 weeks on counter, then it maintains in refrigerator longer. I am hoping Kesar does well here in So Cal, if not where I live, it might do well in the Desert.

Behl, I have Kesar grafted onto my multigraft and it's currently flowering so maybe we will be able to taste it when grown in San Diego. I only Grafted a small branch so it may not even hold any fruit but I'll definitely bring it to the tasting table.

That is one place and I know they did have some Kesar either last year or the year before.

There are also some smaller Indian markets that have carried some Indian imports.  In addition to quality at harvest, the key is the care tbey are given and freshness.

Simon thanks for your comments, I haven't tried a resin or turpentine mango here in Mexico where we're have very limited options, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it, on my 20 young mango collection most are Zill's, but have one Indian Jehengar because of your review of last year, now I'm definitely try to get Kesar, do you think Jehengar has also that resin flavor of Alphonso or Kesar?  Are they similar or way different? Thanks
Title: Re: Indian Mango season starts in about 3 weeks!
Post by: simon_grow on March 20, 2017, 10:18:52 PM
Hey Raulglezruiz,

The Jehengar is an excellent sweet mango that has a bit if that classic Indian resin taste but that Indian resin taste is much more prominent in Alphonso and Kesar. The flavor profile of Kesar is such that even a person not accustomed to that strong Indian resin flavor could still enjoy this fruit. In fact, I brought several Kesars to my work and everyone that sampled the fruit said it was one of the best mangos they have ever tasted and then they asked me where they can purchase some fruit.

The Jehengar was excellent and has an unusually almost white or beige flesh color with a uniquely delicious undertone that is very difficult to put into words. It's almost like a guava type of savory umami, slightly resembling that unique taste I get from the Ice Cream mango that Maurice Kong introduced. I would definitely add Kesar to my collection if I didn't already have it. Actually, if you can get it, Jumbo Kesar is supposed to taste the same as Kesar except it is much larger.

Another new variety of Indian mango that I’ve been hearing amazing reports on its top tier status is the Sonpari mango that’s an Alphonso × Baneshan cross. Unfortunately, it seems like only a couple of people have tasted one. I am curious to see how it compares to other previous Indian mango favorites like Kesar.

The Florida grown Kesar I have had have not had the same resin component of the Alphonso I have had.  Much less intense/overpowering.

The Son Pari I have had here have had its own resin component but not strong piney in nature.   To me, it was different than all the Indian mangoes I have had.

I liked Son Pari better than Kesar.

Anyone know of a place selling Indian mangoes in Miami-Dade (or if I were so lucky, Monroe County) in FL?

Anyone here ever successfully sprout such a mango seed purchased from a local store?

I have a Kesar tree, but it's only the first year in the ground here, and did not push out flowers anyway. So I've still never tasted one, but I'm generally a fan of Indian mangoes. I miss my days in the NYC tri-state area when I could get a variety of Indian mangoes right down the street, and for decent prices... I used to buy a box at a time! But alas, there is barely any Indian population way down here in extreme SFL.

Bao gave me the heads up that Miramar Cash and Carry received their shipment of Indian mangos so of course I had to check it out for myself. They had many cases of both Alphonso and Kesar but they were going pretty fast. I picked up a case of each variety and when I went to pay, the cashier opened each box to allow me to inspect for damaged fruit.

The fruit looked beautiful and they were mostly green with some yellow showing. The Kesars were $28.99 a case and the Alphonso's were $32.99 a case. It will be several days before they are ripe enough to eat but I'll definitely be reporting back with how they taste.

I also prefer Kesar over Alphonso. It would be a miracle if none of the Alphonso's have internal breakdown.

Shane, I'm glad this shipment is good quality. Did you pick your up at Miramar Cash and Carry?

Mangokothiyan, that's a lot of Kesar Mangos, I'm glad to hear it grows well, produces well and is of good quality when grown in Florida.  Because the quality of Alphonso is poor when grown in Florida and SoCal, I was worried about Kesar.

Boxturtle, they should have Indian Mangos in some of your local Indian Supermarket. My friend in the Anaheim area picked up a couple cases but when he went back yesterday, he got the last box so call first.

I couldn't wait any longer so I cut into an Alphonso last night and it was way underripe. It will be several more days before they will be ready. Illl report back when they are ripe.

I planted the Alphonso and pulled it out after 3-4 years. Lots of flowers but not even one fruit. And the fruit I tasted from another Alphonso tree was just about average. Kesar, though, is another story. Great tasting and pretty looking fruit. The fruit has really good keeping quality too.

Banganpalli is not bad, it has some Indian Resin flavor and is sweet. Ask them when they will get their next shipment. You may want to perform a google search for Indian Supermarkets around your area and then calling them first before making the trip.

It's been relatively cool at my house, today is the first really warm day so it's been taking my mangos a while to ripen. I picked several Alphonso and Kesars and left them in my warm car for several hours to warm them up so that they will ripen faster. I was finally able satisfy my craving for Indian Mangos tonight.

First up was the Alphonso. These are the early season fruit and the smell was not very strong until I cut the fruit open. The color is also not as dark as the later season fruit but the taste was still very good. The Alphonso had a Brix of 18% and was very good but definitely not at its peak. I got sweetness and Indian resin but the Indian resin component was mostly concentrated right up next to the thin skin. For an early season Alphonso, I was very satisfied.
(https://s2.postimg.cc/dsp7djjit/IMG_1970.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/dsp7djjit/)

Next up was the Kesar, again for an early season mango, it was very satisfying although not at its peak. It also had a Brix reading of 18%, both varieties don't really reach their peak flavor until they hit 19-20% Brix. Kesar is a notch below Alphonso in terms of the depth and complexity of the Indian resin component but in my personal opinion, Kesar is better tasting overall because of the richness of its sweet and acidic components. These mangos were very good but I know they will get better as the season progresses.

There's a lot to be happy about, mango season is here!

Got a box of Kesar from Namaste, Irvine today for $29.99 with 11 mangos inside.
(No alphonso, but they also have few boxes of Banganpalli and "Mahajarit" -I think?-  that I didn't buy).

I like the multiple coloration so far; very appealing. Not much smell, yet.

Looks like the stash at Pioneer Cash and Carry in Artesia.  $25 for a box of 11 kesar and $27 for a box of about 8 Benganpali (side of box was also stamped badami).  Pretty good prices compared to last year (last year was $40 for banganpalli).  Most fruit reports from friends said they were very green...needing about 4-5 days to ripen.

Yesterday I bought a box of Kay Bee brand Kesar mangoes, from an Indian grocery store in West Palm Beach.

I was surprised when the grocer retrieved the case from a refrigerated room. They were cold. I have just emailed Kay Bee to see if they ship their mangoes already ripe.   Otherwise, I'm assuming that the cold will prevent them from reaching their potential.

I ate one last night. It was good but not excellent. Since I've never had Kesar mangoes before I have nothing to compare it to.     ???

I also believe that refrigeration harms the ripening process. These early Kesars and Alphonso's are very good but not excellent yet. The mid season fruit are excellent. The Kesars and Alphonso's usually give off a sweet aroma with some Indian twang when it is ripe for eating. The flesh color should also have a slightly orange tinge that gets darker as it approaches ripeness. If the flesh color is a dull yellow, the fruit is either not ripe or it was harvested pre maturely.

Yeah, I question that refrigeration process based on the awful fruit we get in the store.  If like tomatoes  and you leave them off the tree for any length of time, whether it be to store them commercially or ripen them on a counter, put them in cold conditions and then bring them out to ripen some more, there may be an enzyme created that ruins the texture.  That enzyme from warm->cold->warm again for a tomato turns the texture to mush.

Studies have shown that mangos start to get chilling injury below 55F. Unfortunately along the cold supply chain they often get stored with fruits that can tolerate significantly lower storage temps than this, which will impact the final brix of the fruit.

So I stopped today at this little Indian grocery store on Venice Blvd. called Kavita Grocery.  When I asked if he had any Indian Mangos, he said; Too early. The man said he should get some in in about two weeks.  I bet they will be expensive.

I just stopped by Miramar Cash and Carry to pick up some more Kesars but they are all out. They did have plenty of Banganpalli(Badami) for $25.99 for a box of 9 fruit. I picked up a box of the Badami, I guess this is an alternative name for Banganpalli.

The cashier said they will be receiving their next shipment of Kesars on Thursday. I'll report back on the taste of the Badami when they ripen up.

not sure what system these people are using,  but some fruit exporters are adopting, newer quality control measures.   the old traditional method,  packing houses receive fruit from the orchards,  measure brix,  then determine from that , at what temperature the fruit need to be in shipping, to prevent them from ripening in transit.
the main problem here, is that shippers to be on the safe side, will push for pickers to pick fruit sooner,  or will refrigerate colder than normal. these fruit are often received at destination, too soon,  and supermarkets just store them until they look good for the selves.  this storage also is not desired by supermarket chains and distributors.

Newer quality control measures,    The packing house will receive fruit, measure brix,   but now use a formula, for that particular variety, and destination.   they will in some cases "haste" the ripening, using ethylene. ( this is the natural process used by fruit ) take note that this is not the dangerous Calcium carbide artificial ripening.  also must understand they are not actually ripening them before hand.  what they are doing is synchronizing the ripening stage of the fruit.  this and adjusting them so the fruit will not have to be refrigerated at lower temperatures,  they also time it so fruit will arrive at "ready to be sold" stage.  this removes the possibility of bad storage practices at the supermarkets or distributors,  temperature sensors are stored in random boxes,  these record the whole shipping,  at destination, they can pop these in a computer and the buyer "knows" what these fruit have gone through.

In other words,  both buyers and shippers are working to improve quality of fruit for end consumer,  a poor little mango goes through a lot of sh*t before it reaches your kitchen table.  when it comes from across the planet.

Simon, Badami is Alphonso name from Southern India. However, these boxes were pre-printed and they did not have one for Bengalpali I guess. That is why you are putting stickers on it.

Simon,

its been 8 days since I bought my Kesar box and they are still green, getting soft but not ripening to where they are ready. Did you find that to be an issue? usually this happens when Mango is picked way too early and sometimes it never gets to perfect ripening and sugars.

These early Kesars are not as good as last years. Some of mine are still green on the outside but they are ripe on the inside. They are ripe on the inside but the flesh color is pale and the quality is not as good. The first ones to ripen were more yellow in color and tasted pretty good but these later ripening green ones are sub par. I'm hoping the next shipment will be much better.

The Banganpalli should be ready soon so I'll report back with taste report as soon as I cut them open.

Simon, Behl....the consensus this year is that the early kesars are much better than the early banganpalli.  So far, I'm one of the few that enjoyed the early banganpalli.

I couldn't wait anymore so I cut into the Banganpalli mango and it was still slightly underripe although it did sweeten up. The Brix only read 16% but it really tasted like it was 19%. I found this mango to be great tasting with less fiber than Kesar.

Did anyone else notice the Kesars had quite a bit of fiber this year?

The First thing that hit me with the Banganpalli was the sweetness followed by the Indian resin taste. The Indian resin flavor profile is completely different than that of the Alphonso and Kesar if you ask me. The resin or turpene component is more one dimensional and does not linger on the tongue like the King and Queen. Some people are going to say I'm pulling this out of my ass but I'm going to put it out here anyways, I got notes of gasoline in the resin component of this mango, in a good way.

I know, I know, it sounds crazy and who in the world would want a gasoline tasting mango right? Well it's just a hint of gasoline in the Indian resin flavor component and it is very very minor and this is according to my palate. I have a sensitive palate and nose. It tastes very unique and is quite a nice change from the resin component of Alphonso and Kesar.

This mango is definitely worth trying

thanks guys for the heads up was able to score a box of alphonso and banganaballi.   This is my first time ever tasting mango besides the usual that are available at the local market.   The alphonso was phenomenal! Sweet and a whole lot of favor! The banganaballi flavor was very light and floral it was sweet but didn't pack a punch like the alphonso.   The box of alphonso was more consistent with flavor.  Where as the banganaballi was all over the place.  The first two banganaballi was bland.  Like Simon says probably picked way to early.  Two hand spots like a ripe banana was delicious and her flavorful.  Both had that what I believe you guys describe as the Indian resin but it was more pronounced in the banganaballi.   I think it's partially the flavors in alphonso was a lot stronger and loud.  If you guys say that the Kesar taste better then the alphonso I have been missing out on a piece of heaven all my life.  Like I said my taste buds was already blown away by alphonso.

Please let us know which ones are your favorites. I have been disappointed with the quality of Kesar and Banganpalli this year as they seem to have been picked under ripe and the internal color was not a deep orange in the Kesar, instead, it was more of a pale yellow. I'm considering ordering some Mulgova and Sindrhi.

Kesar mango isn't as good as the last year crop. I remember Kesar was very good when I had it before and it was very close to Alphonso mango in sweetness and flavor, imo.

Malgova mango was a total surprise for me.It was Very sweet with nice/pleasant citrusy flavor.  it is highly underrated mango especially in here as no one in this forum is mentioning it. However, the total edible flesh is not great but still I believe this cultivar deserve more attention. Keep us updated if you can get it in California.

Here how I would rank the mangoes that I had mentioned in my previous posts.

-Best (worth growing)
Imam Passand
Mallika
Mulgoba Mango
Kesar (in 2016  ;D)

-Good (cool to have it, if you have lots of sapce)
Rajapuri
Omelette mango
Okrung

-bad (not worth the space)
Ammani Mango

-Burn it.

I've been underwhelmed by the quality of the Indian Mangos this year. The mangos came in early but the quality was not as good as 2016 because these mangos appear to have been picked too early and did not reach the Brix levels of the last couple years that I have been reporting on them. The last couple cases of Alphonso, Kesar and Banganpalli were all decent quality but not good enough to make me crave them and purchase case after case like I did in 2016.

Can anyone report back on the quality of the late season fruit for varieties like Kesar? I called Miramar Cash and Carry and they said they still have Kesars.

I was just sent an email from MangoZZ.com and I find their reports on the progression of Indian Mango season very useful. I like their report not because they tell you which mango varieties are good but because they tell you which varieties weren't so good this season and a reason why they felt the quality was less than expected.

Evilfruit,
I agree, this later season fruit is so much better. I just cut open my first fruit from the latest box
And it was incredibly delicious. It had a Brix of 20.5% and had just the perfect amount of Indian resin flavor to balance the sweetness. The flesh was melting and super juicy, perhaps a bit over ripe. This fruit had very broad shoulders, I hope the other skinnier fruit are just as good as this one.

Unfortunately this is probably the last of the Kesars for this year, I'm going to call Miramar Cash and Carry to see if they will be getting any more This season. These later season fruit are the same quality that I remember from last year.

I stopped by Miramar Cash and Carry yesterday and they got another shipment of Kesar and Banganpalli mangos. These late season Kesar are excellent quality and all the fruit have filled in shoulders and some of the fruit are almost completely yellow with some just showing a blush of yellow. The average Brix is about 20% and these late season fruit are as good as the ones from last year. Unfortunately, this may be the last shipment of the year depending on wether or not they can acquire more from the supplier.
