Wurtz Avocado, thumbs up!
« on: November 21, 2013, 07:12:48 AM »
I've had several Wurtz avocados this season and last and its definitely a winner for me. Very good full bodied avocado flavor, not watery at all, texture is Haas like, and plenty of oil content. To me the Wurtz provides that soft mouth feel associated with avos with high fat content. Perfect guacamole avo.

My Wurtz tree has definitely been a slow grower compared to my other avo trees. I've only tasted Wurtz grown in pots at Excalibur, but hopefully my tree appreciates its location and puts out fruit of similar quality.

Sort of in shape, but much smaller. Taste is totally different than Lula, no sweetness.

Congratulations!  The fruit resembles Lula.

Its mostly Guatemalan. Here's a little key used here if interested

Good looking fruit there jc. I keep my Wurtz in a pot and have the big boys - Reed, Edranol, Sharwil and Secondo in ground as the backbone of my planting.

Looking forward to when your 'Wurtz' avocado tree produces fruit, thanks for your post & pictures.

As slow as it grows, I'll be buying Wurtz fruit at least next season too.

Do you have a Day avocado tree also?  It's not listed on your profile, but I know you've commented on that variety previously.

Yep, Day, Lula, Oro Negro, and Wurtz. I've added and removed some trees so I guess I need to update my profile.

My neighbor has a Day also and his fruit have been top notch in my book. I'll let mine start holding fruit in 2015.

jc, could you describe the growth characteristics of a Day tree?  Tall and upright, spreading, vigorous and fast-growing, slow-growing?  Any other characteristics?  (Sorry to hijack the thread away from Wurtz, but Day's the one I need more information on.)

I have a young Day avocado (5') that held 3 fruit this year. Very good, oily enough to make guacamole but probably not as oily as Hass. Creamy texture. Large fruit, good ratio. Cute and compact in its growth habit.

Neighbor's tree at 3-4 years old. It's been pruned once, this past summer.

It looks to be somewhat spreading, rather than tall and upright, and of moderate growth rate.  A good-looking tree!

Definately spreading, with most growth on the leeward side.   :P

I just read that they sell Wurz tree's in Singapore. They are not west indian cado's so i 'm amazed they imported them to Singapore at all.

I guess they will fruit in the ultra tropics or they made a mistake by importing them.

If they can grow guatamalan avocado's in Singapore then i also should be able to grow them in Bangkok right? I have a seedling Fuerte here in a pot, i planted it to have a rootstock but now i think i will try to grow it to maturity.

How does the fruit peel?  Is the skin thick enough to where you don't have to fight it?

I'm going to do some grafting late winter of "dwarf" cados and my 3 choices so far are Wurtz, Rincon, and Hazzard.

I don't know exactly. I have gotten all my Wurtz fruit from potted trees @ Excalibur. My tree is still too small to hold fruit. Flowers well but I remove the fruit in furtherance of veg growth.  In January 2013, Molina and found a pair of ripe Wurtz that were overlooked. I bought one of the two, it was awesome.

I have seen some literature that says the Wurtz season is May to November, but I've never seen ripe fruit in the summer.

jc, from what I've read on this Thread, the 'Wurtz' season is over?

I'm not much of a peeler, I prefer to scoop. But it's probably fine to peel, the skin seems tough enough.

I can't wait for your report where you'd say that you finally got fruit from your 'Wurt's' avocado tree. Please keep your reports on the 'Wurt's' coming. I wan to compare the taste and general quality of your 'Wurt's' to a 'Donnie' that I have growing, among others that I'm also waiting to produce fruit.

Great!  Not a peeler either.  I use a large soup spoon to scoop too.
