Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are all Simmonds Avocados Semi-Dwarf?
« on: December 28, 2020, 05:36:01 AM »
Nearly all Simmonds avocado trees I see for sale list them as "Semi-Dwarf".  Are they naturally semi-dwarf or being grafted onto semi-dwarf rootstock for for some reason?  What is the deal? I prefer full sized trees.  Thanks.

Looking to add an early/summer avocado tree and was wanting to get a Simmons but heard they were cold sensitive.  I have a mature Choquette that is doing great, but it is supposedly a bit more cold hardy than Simmons.  If there is anyone growing Simmons in the Tampa area please advise.  Thank you.

I have Brogdon, Choquette, Day, Oro Negro & Nishikawa all excellent for flavor and fine for Zone 9b production with short term temps into the mid 20's.  Never grown or tried Mexicola.  They tend to be small and not usually at the top of the list, but they are cold hardy.

My Choquette Avocado is over glowing and been delicious.  Yes Choquettes taste great as long as you wait till December to start eating them.

MOST AVOCADO ARE SELF FERTILE - YOU JUST GET MORE WITH A&B.  SOME VARITIES ARE BOTH A & B.

Get an Oro Negro, Day or Nishikawa if you are in Florida.

Hass is not particularly cold hardy.  I have lost young Hass trees to temps around 30 degrees.

I know they are similar, but which wins out for flavor if you could only plant one?

Brogdon is a popular HOME variety in the Southern USA available at most USA fruit nurseries.  There are better varieties.  I would choose DAY over Brogdon.  Day produces in a couple of years, not eight

24 degrees will be no problem for Brogdon.  I have read they sre hardy to 18 degrees.  My Brogdon planted next to a privacy fence laughs at short term night temps of mid 20's degrees here in South Florida.  No worries.  The thin skin makes them less resistant to fruit rot tho.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Controlling Fruit Rot on Brogdon Avocafos
« on: August 26, 2020, 06:27:09 AM »
Brogdon skin is very thin and prone to rotten spots on the bottom which spread to the rest of the fruit before it can ripen.  Is there a solution?  Any nutrient that will encourage thicker skin on the fruit?  It effects about 50% of the fruit on my tree.  Thanks.

I should have mentioned it didn't fruit in 2016 either which I had assumed was just as off year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Honey Kiss Mango - Worth it?
« on: August 15, 2020, 02:16:49 AM »
First most mangos taste good including Honey Kiss, but with hundreds of varieties and limited time, space and money not all can be top 10.  Almost every mango tree I ever planted was at least an 8 ......most were 9's never tasted 10 as I believe there is always for improvement  (Carrie, Glenn, PPK).  Most mangoes unless they suck fall into that 7 to 7 1/2 range
(Keitt). Honey Kiss 7.25 are good, but not good enough for me to plant one unless space is plentiful.  I assume they are late like their parent Keitt.

I have the same problem with round decay spots on my Brogdons on 50% of the fruit all in the same place at the widest part at the bottom.  I think that that may be where the fruit expands the most and the skin is thinnest or may crack and get infected.

My Brogdons have never turned black as the squirrels wipe them out before they turn.  I have to eat them mature green and they have good flavor anytime after August 7th.  The flavor gets better each day and I have found they peak around Sept 1 for me.  I have noticed that they start to take on a slight deviled egg after taste (not a criticism) by late September.  I have heard the egg/canistel flavor comparison mentioned by others when describing other varieties, but never Brogdon, possibly because Brogdon only has that flavor at a certain stage.  I believe you could make a very good "egg salad" using avocados when they are at that stage.  Dont ask me how they taste when they turn black on in October, the squirrels take them all before that.

Hey Guys

I have a VP tree that got pushed over about 10-15 degrees by the last hurricane we had.  Other than a minor list it has showed no damage or stress.  I know VP`s often skip a year, so until now it didn't seem unsual.   Prior to this it fruited regularly.
Tree continues to grow well and look healthy.  Any thoughts or ideas

Thanks.  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wanted: EDWARD, PPK, DAY & ORO NEGRO TREES
« on: March 05, 2020, 04:34:52 PM »
Looking for these trees in healthy filled out 3 gallon size with decent roots.  Need a place that ship or is in the Tampa area.  Yes already tried Pine Island in Miami & Fruitscapes in Bookelia.  Thanks.

Hey Guys

I know that Valencia Pride often skips a year, but it appears this will be the 3rd year of no bloom or fruit.  For comparison my neighbors Valencia Pride is in full bloom.  This tree did get pushed about 10 degrees over in the last hurricane, but didn't seem any worse for wear.  I fertilize regularly, but is there other nutrient or anything else I can do to get this tree back on track.  It's acting more like a Mulgoba right now.  Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Star Fruit: Kari vs. Fwang Tung
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:05:19 PM »
Hey

I am planning on planting a Kari carambola tree.  As they are so prolific I was reluctant to plant a 2nd variety unless justified.  Is Fwang Tung unique enough and good enough to also justify planting as well?

Thanks. : )

The more I read about them the taste seems quite similar so it may just boil down tree performance and the season Nov-Dec for Nishikawa and Sept-Oct for Super Hass.  I would be interested to hear from anyone with a VERY MATURE Super Hass to know if the uneven ripening issues become less of an issue as the tree gets older.  If Nishikawa's grow ok then that might be the deciding factor.  The uneven ripening with the Super Hass was
also unripe flesh contained within ripe flesh.  Sort of like eating mashed potatoes with rubber bands in them.  Also the ripening differences were days apart if the other parts ripened at all. The parts that did ripen were very good but it was only about half the fruit.

Squam said his Nishikawa hasn't grown well despite good care.....tho others have said otherwise.

The flavor of Super Hass is VERY good when properly ripened.  It does seem to take a week longer than any other avocado to soften up on the kitchen counter and the uneven ripening issues are apparent.  One side soft..other side hard...etc.  You sort of have to eat the ripe parts & save the rest for later. Having said that the flavor of Super Hass immediately put it on my top 5 list so the ripening issues aren't a deal breaker for me.  Our choices for in Florida for Hass type avocado's can be limited so we can't be too picky.  I have made space in the yard for Super Hass which says a lot as I'm very selective as I have limited space.  Ironically to my surprise the much berated Florida Hass I got from Squam was VERY good and I would plant it, if it had a better reputation for not having issues.

In my discussion with Squam about Super Hass & Nishikawa this is what he had to say.  I highly value & respect his knowledge and experience.  Also if anyone is interested Alex/Squam also ships  avocados now.........try his Oro Negros if you have never had them before.  It's arguably the best tasting & most versatile Florida variety there is.

"Super Hass like others seems rather unpredictable in terms of its ripening characteristics. We’re at the point where some of them are splitting on the tree and falling off. I would say it’s equal to Nishikawa in eating quality, but our Super Hass tree has performed much better in terms of overall tree health and production. That may not be representative of how Nishikawa would perform in your area though. We’ve been trying to “revive” our Nishikawa tree and though it’s been very well cared for, it barely grows.

So based on just this experience I’d probably pick Super Hass, but I might try topworking a tree into Nishikawa to see if I can get a bigger/healthier one to evaluate".

I would love to try a Nishikawa if anyone knows where I can procure a few.

Thanks : )

Tell us about citruses that you like/dislike and why, and people will give you the personalized suggestion. Best is always relative as Millet mentioned.

I have grown nearly all the COMMON seeded varieties.  For flavor I think my old Dancy is my favorite seeded mandarin tree.  Never have grown any of the newer seedless varieties.  Is it true you have to keep them separate from seeded varieties? If so how far?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Super Hass or Nishikawa....Need help deciding

Starting to run out of tree space.  Have a spot for either a Super Hass or Nishikaawa avocado.  I have tasted Super Hass before, but not Nishikawa.  What say you?

Does this look like Lula to you?

If it has a unique sweet taste it's a Lula

Thanks I was down there last year and I just happened to be there on a day he was closed....a Monday I think.   Better perimeter camera security system than the White House.

I know avocados don't grow true from seed, but are there any known exceptions to to this as with some mangoes?

Thanks
