  • My favorite source for seeds is Fruit Lovers (http://www.fruitlovers.com/seedlistUSA.html).
  • Trade Winds Fruit (http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/) is another source that I've bought from a few times. Not always the freshest seeds.
  • Govardhan Gardens (http://organicfarm.net/seeds.htm) often has a very wide selection of seeds
  • Montoso Gardens (http://www.montosogardens.com/tropical_fruit_seeds.htm)

Thanks Murahilin for the recommendation. I hope to live up to that. BTW, i hope to be posting some notices on this board, with your permission, for newly acquired seeds not yet on my website. That way members interested could get first dibs on really rare seeds.

Apart from the websites of Oscar (Fruit Lovers), Bryan (Montoso Gardens) and Sadhu (Govardhan Gardens), let me also recommend and add Jim West http://www.ecuadorexplorer.com/guaycuyacu/fruits_1.html (http://www.ecuadorexplorer.com/guaycuyacu/fruits_1.html) as sources for seeds.

I have bought a few times from them. 0% success with recalcitrant and other tropical fruit seeds. Only eucapytus and acacias germinated well. Consider that first the seeds are collected far away, then send to Germany, then stored, and later they arrive at the customer. I guess, in a best case scenario those seeds take at least 4 weeks from collecting until they arrive the customer.

I have ordered from them before.  seems there is less risk of confiscation when seeds are in a factory sealed envelope ( Burpee style etc. ) unlike when I order from an Ebay seller, which I have had mixed results, sellers will often re-send them if they get confiscated though, and I usually get them eventually.

But like others have said, regarding the time sensitive ones, sometimes I just do not get any germination at all.

I wonder if the mail irradiates packages, or uses a strong xray or something that can kill seeds? could be because of the cold also as others have mentioned.

Some species are just hard to germinate; but how have the recalcitrant seeds been packed when you got them?

Before I was able to find live Mangosteen locally i purchased seeds on 3 different occasions from 3 different Asian sources. these seeds were all well packed, they arrived in moist peat, in zip locked bags and taped. non arrived crushed, some even sprouted on route, but not one grew. In this case I suspect it was the delay, the fastest order took around 18 days. since mangosteen can lose 75% of its viability in just 1 week, its no surprise.  in contrast, the Garcinia aristata seeds I bought from a US source, gave me like 100% germination.

Are there many mangosteen trees that are producing in DR? Has your trees begun fruiting yet?

The biggest seeds in the smallest leafed mangosteen strains kept moist in sealed bags will last pretty well. This is hard to control if you're ordering seeds (nucellic inclusions).

First I have to mention that the mail in Mexico is not the greatest and is getting worse by the day , before I used to get seeds from all over the world in less than a month . Now only registered mail arrives , I guess the rest gets stolen ....

For me # 1 is Fruitlovers # 2 would be Sadhu and Sherry in PR  and Helton in Brazil  , he's the sweetest guy and will bend over backwards to keep you happy , I met him in person .
Kinda pissed of with Montoso garden ( not with Bryan ) who made me wait 4 years to find out the yellow grumichama I asked for were actually black...
Jim in Equador has nice stuff but poor quality ( several arrived with worms )

This is just my experience with commercial seed sellers and I want to take advantage of this message to thank all the rare fruit collectors world wide I swapped seeds with.

There are fruiting mangosteen here now, I have not seen them personally, but the seedlings I have are from these fruiting trees. there are only a few scattered around in private collections and in research centers. a person I know that is a Biologist in the country was able to get his mangosteen to fruit in just 5 years, using organic bio stimulants.   my plants are still too small, about 2-3 years old with no branching yet.

I never use regular postal service in the DR, I would probably not get one item.

I use a mailing service called "Business Mail"   http://www.bmcargo.com/ (http://www.bmcargo.com/)   Envelopes and letters are dirt cheap to mail in, and anything under 200 dollars pays no import tax.   a letter may only cost me 0.60 cents dollars, to bring over. and even more important I have a US mailing address, and someone is there to receive packages.

But they will ship containers full also.

In Mexico there must be a similar type service available.  everything from seeds, magazine subscriptions, parts, clothes etc. heck they even have a PC where you can order something on Ebay and pay them in pesos , and they pay Ebay. for those people that don't have a PC or Bank account in dollars.

Coincidentally there is a great supplier of these biostimulants in Mexico,

http://www.agroquimicos-organicosplm.com/bioestimulante-33-2#inicio  (http://www.agroquimicos-organicosplm.com/bioestimulante-33-2#inicio)

I have not found similar products in the States yet, closest thing is what you see in Hydroponic shops.  anyway that is for another thread hehe :)

To get your mangosteen seedling fruiting/flowering prior to celebrating its 5th anniversary of being planted out, it doesn't always take special treatment.Mine fruited at 7ft and at almost 5 years in the ground, being 1 foot when planted. It didn't get special  treatment like dry season watering and regular fertilzer until after it first fruited.Likewise a grafted durian fruited within 5 years before weather took it down.I think the prolonged heat and humidity of the local monsoon season may give them a boost.I do however have a mangosteen runt which at 5 years is heavily branched but only 4 feet and nowhere near fruiting.

I really need to get mine in the ground,  they will just not doing too well in containers.   the seedlings I have are over two years old, and they are only a foot high. but they seem to be speeding up now, I read they have a very slow beginning and speed up later.  the biggest tree I have seen here is over 12 years old and has not fruited yet !  but I think this is because its under shade, and is not fertilized or anything.

Mangosteen seeds that are well packed will last several weeks, and start to germinate inside the bag. The fact that the seeds were germinated but did not sprout indicates probably temperature extremes in route that killed them. X-raying of packages doesn't happen, unless the package is suspected of containing a bomb, or such. Most postal processing centers don't even have x-ray machines. The only exception is packages going to Washington D.C. thanks to the nut case that was sending white powder to congressmen.

Thanks,

Officially yes, a phyto is needed for any plant product sent to PR. But in fact you can get away with small packages without it as they will not be opened.

I was planning to attend the conference meeting in Hilo. But unfortunately that meeting is at the same time as the orchard tour at my place. Kona meeting is next day but will not be able to attend that. Why don't you come to the orchard tour of my place? That is October first around 1pm. There will be van shuttles from Hilo or you can drive here in your own car.

Those photos show immature fruits, just starting to form. The pit is large, almost as large as avocado pit. You won't be able to get them from this company because 1) it says right on their sight they are unavailable and more importantly 2) any Persea species is not allowed into USA from outside the country, and that company is in Belize.

I did meet up with Jim at the conference.  Saw his presentation.  Fascinating stuff.  He has earned his place in the history books.  Anyone that can live a 3hour hike from the closest dirt/mud road has my respect.

He is definitely limiting contact.  Has all the business he needs I guess.

I am going catch up with you Oscar.  Bring my check book and clean you out.  Ha ha. Lol.
I just got to get a spare minute away from my wife's goat farm.  Got to get some stuff planted before she takes over the whole 25acres.  Haha.

We trek over to del's in Hilo enough. Just a matter of setting up a time.

I don't understand why we keep getting postings like this.  This place has been discussed before (in page one of this string) where even customers in Europe got zero germination on tropical fruit seeds.  I got zero as well.  Only order from them if you are buying non-recalcitrant seeds or like to throw money away.  Prices are not so low if the seeds never germinate.

Not sure why the Ecuadorian http://guaycuyacu.net/seed_sell.html (http://guaycuyacu.net/seed_sell.html) has not been stickied?

Then there is the Brazilian vendor http://www.availableseeds.com/ (http://www.availableseeds.com/) based in Sao Paolo.

I've not ordered from either but see no reason not to give either the benefit of the doubt and include them in the sticky.

The guaycuyacu link is Jim West.  He is listed on the first page of this string.  He is a very good source for reasonably priced seeds.  A few years back, he indicated that he was no longer taking new customers but I have heard that he still does sometimes.

availableseeds.com has also been mentioned here before.  I had good luck with most of the seeds I got from him.  However it seems like his prices have climbed up a bit since first being mentioned here.

During the last three years i ordered from the AVAILABLE SEEDS and was very satisfied with the quality of seeds, package and shipment.
Never had problems. They used to send 10-20 seeds, for example, when you buy 5 small size seeds. However, when the seeds are definetely big, they sent the ordered quantity.

Hello,

Where can I find quality seed for pineapple, coconut, mango, avocado, papaya, edible banana and similar tropical fruit which would be shipped to my country?

I've started some kind of tropical plants indoor growing with seeds from the groceries store fruit, but I don't expect much because quality of those seeds is not anything near perfect as far as I am concerned. I am going to install some adjustable RGB LED strips and with the new gear I am thinking new seeds as well. As you can see I live in zone 7 with apples and pears going on here, and in winter (and pretty much spring and autumn) conditions pineapple and such has nothing to do outdoors, that's why I have to go with indoor growing. Along with LED strips I will go with temperature and humidity adjustment stuff. So if I go with quality seed as well it can turn out into something I guess.

I've tried to search on Amazon and E-bay but most of sellers don't ship here and of course I can't be sure if the seed is good or not. I am looking rather for some registered online seed shop which distribute this stuff internationally. Sorry if my English made you any trouble and thanks for your responses.

How's TradeWinds for vegetable seeds? Particularly interested in allium (and related seeds). The seeds I bought over from the Ph don't seem to do well in Oz and vice versa. I've bought plants (sets and mature plants) as well as seeds of ramp, scallions and various wild onions locally and I've found that it doesn't matter where I get my alliums from - they're all very prone to purple blotch? And I'm trying to keep everything organic. Figured it must be something within Oz that's making all the alliums susceptible? Generational degeneration of the local seeds perhaps.

Anyone tried the alliums from TradeWinds in a semi-organic/purely organic planting? How did it go?

Eri Soto tried to reply but reported this to the moderator instead. Here is the reply:

These are in my opinion the best of what was listed...in descending order of best upon arrival for FLORIDA!

1) Flying Fox Fruit (Proximity and quality source)

2) Govardhan Gardens (he takes great preparation and care of his seeds before sending)

3) Trade Winds Fruit (VERY rarely have I ever gotten anything from them that was not going to germinate (and when it was the case it was only a few of the seeds in the species ordered)...they also have really good seeds and presumably storage practices!

4) Toptropicals is pretty good and has a good variety. Their website is frustrating, but they have a lot of Ethnobotanical and other useful info!

This year I had stunning success with Silverhill Seeds, based out South Africa. I don't know if they can ship some places right now due to Covid-19, But, compared to some of the other known names, their seeds gave me the best germination, I'm going to have to give away or sell some of the plants I got from their seeds! And these were shipped halfway around the world!

They don't just sell fruit seeds, but if you know what you're looking for, it's easy to search their list.

Site's here: http://www.silverhillseeds.co.za/ (http://www.silverhillseeds.co.za/)

Also, they deserve some purchasing love! They had a recent tragedy of the original owners being kidnapped and killed by extremists, while seed collecting a couple years ago

Sad to hear. Seed collecting in many parts of Africa can be dangerous! This is a big part of the reason that so many fruits from Africa are still relatively unknown.

Just a heads-up, but Tobias Spanner (rarepalmseeds.com) has an absolutely horrendous reputation within the industry, and I’m sorry to say it’s well-deserved. Occasionally, you’ll get ~60-70% germination rate from a seed packet, but maybe 90% of the seed packets he ships deliver a 0% germ. I’ve gotten seeds from him that were just a fragile seed coat with holes where insects had burrowed in. If you attempt to contact them about it, your repeated emails will go unanswered for months, if they ever get answered at all, and they make zero attempt to make it right. It’s not just me - I know several other growers who’ve had the same experience.

Oh, and I’ve also seen posts from him on other sites where he’s responded to negative reviews by getting belligerent and threatening to sue people.

Not worth it, when there are so many solid vendors out there.

I have not had any bad experiences with rarepalmseeds.com I have ordered palms, cycads, trees and some fruit over a number of years.

Germination has varied some over 90% some50% some 10 and some zero but overall I have been pretty happy with them. They even refunded me once when the germinated seeds were clearly not what I bought. I took a photos of the seedlings and they credited my card.

Given the huge variety of seeds they offer I think they do well.

I’ve looked at everrry website in this topic, searched the forums and messaged a seller I thought may have access to a seed however I am completely out of luck so far! I’m looking for Dabai / Canarium odontophyllum seeds, native to Borneo.
I wonder if anyone has seen seed sellers specialising in Borneo natives or if anyone has heard of these seeds being sold this year?

Beware when buying from Fruitlovers.  Ordered seeds over 3 months ago and after many many emails I was told a few weeks ago that they were out of some of the seeds I ordered.  I requested the refund they offered.  Now, a month later I have no refund and still no seeds.

You answered my many emails using fruitlovers@fruitlovers.com, when you offered to refund me for the seeds you no longer had and when  said you were sending out the other seeds.  Is there another email you prefer me using at this time?

I purchased Vittelaria paradoxa from Oscar Jaitt / Fruit's Lover. Probably the worst seller I ever dealled with. He shipped the seeds in normal courier which took more than two months to arrive. Seeds arrived totally roten. When you are a pro you know these species need to be planted fastly and cannot travel for a while (like clove, cocoa, etc..) Asked for refund, no news.

It seems to me that this is not a completely fair statement. I recently bought seeds from Oscar, additionally paid for express delivery, the purchase amount was more than 1 thousand dollars, so I asked Oscar to indicate in the declaration the amount of 200 dollars to avoid customs duties in Russia. The parcel arrived to me 18 days after being shipped from the USA. All seeds are in good condition. I think you yourself made a mistake by not paying for express delivery.

I got 2 plinia yasuni and 7 salticola seeds not one popped. Its been about 2.5-3 months i figured 1 would pop by now. I contacted them got one response then never emailed me back after that. Trade winds never emailed me back at all about the bad batch of pdm seeds (6) i got, not to mention the grub that came in with the seeds i guess that should have been my sign. They both have lost my future buisness for sure.

Expereince with farwell farms this far.
Had satisfactory germiantion of porcelia nitidifolia and plina salticola from farwell farms. Garcinia macrophylla will take longer to germinate but seeds look healthy when scratched.
It was easy to communicate with them and it's great that they offer DHL. Very good experience.

Experience with trade winds seeds this far.
Nothing arrived. Maybe it's beause the packge will have the keyword "seeds" on it. Even allowable import gets destoryed sometimes when handled by underpaied custom workers. Would be better if they offered DHL.

Experience with rare palm seeds online this far.
Nothing germinated (could be me or could be the seeds, will see once i get same species again), took a loooooong time to get here and support was non existant for months, strange legal ordering system, pobobly to make it hard for custopmer to get refund. Hopefully they can improve communication and quality.

Experience with seeds del mundo this far.
Nothing arrived. Maybe it's beause the packge will have the keyword "seeds" on it. Even allowable import gets destoryed sometimes when handled by underpaied custom workers. Would be better if they offered DHL.

Experience with sunshineseeds this far.
Not the best germination but I where happy to get something to germiante since they are from Germany, fast shipping, good package, had some seeds germinate
I didn't expect super fresh seeds like from a grower or local and with that in mind I was happy with my purchuase anyway. Looked at the list, "new listing" as these would hopefully be the freshest.

My experience with different sellers on etsy this far.
Low quality seeds or very old seeds, probobly won't use etsy again for this purpose.

My experience with different sellers on ebay this far.
A lot better then etsy. But still patchy seed quality. Ofcourse depends a lot on seller. Good to have some buyer protection.

I just want to contribute, I've purchased from Farwell a handful of times, out of five times I had a good experience four of the times.

The time that I received bad seeds, they were absolutely and completely horrific trash garbage. Think microwaved jabo seeds.

When I contacted them, they were able to refund the purchase and take care of me; I can't speak for everyone but I was pleased. The overall germination (of the good seeds) has been very high, and overall I've been pleased.

Each order I made was approximately $150.

I tried Farwell once, seeds came in baggies with no medium to keep them humid. Germination was decent, maybe half came up. I planted 5 sabara seeds in one pot for example, 2 came up. I don't think I'll buy there again. FLNative has the freshest seeds I've found.

Best purchase so far in my 5 years of spending way to much on tropical fruit trees.

Bought a bunch of rio grande cherry seeds from Kevin, screen name (Kevin Jones) that were already a great price for corg seeds, then they were of a superior variety called nelita. He also miss counted and threw in a bit extra  ;)

This is my fourth time buying from Kevin, has always been really great. Thanks again

I have bought seeds many times from Matt at tradewindsfruit good delivery and germination. If If I had any issue he has responded to my emails promptly and the issue is resolved. Not the cheapest and good variety and good CS.

Bought from sunshineseeds a few times with mixed results on germination and as they are in EU may not always get the seeds :)
They had some ornamental seeds could not find elsewhere.

There are some great people on this forum for seeds though.

Can everyone please help add to this list? I know there are a ton more sources for seeds.

  • Vivero Anones (http://viveroanones.com/)

A site I've been using recently for both seeds and (small) plants. Seasonal - she doesn't have the whole inventory all the time. But I've had good success with what I've gotten. Not 100% (They are plants, after all...and shipping post-COVID has been tricky.) but very good results overall. Site is Sri Lankan based, I'm US.

I have had really good luck with Oscar at Fruit Lovers, Tradewinds, Montoso, and also Forest House in Cameroon.

In fairness to these sellers, you can try to select good seeds all you want, but without a pair of magic glasses, there is no way to tell what is actually viable. Germination is affected by a million tiny variables.  Ordering one or two of a variety is just silly.

I always order more seeds than I need, to account for varying germination rates, and because shipping is so hard on some seeds.

Out of 30 Mandela's Gold strelitzia seeds, I got one to germinate.  Of course, over-ordering is also why I currently have 50 cacao seedlings...

I ALWAYS pay for the fastest delivery and feel it is worth it.

Cheers, Carolyn

Aloha Kakou,

I would just like everyone to know that there is a new seed company in town, Tropical Tree Seed Co.  It is one that Iʻm starting up from the big island of Hawaii.

If you are interested in tropical fruit seeds of any kind, I can get them for you, as long as theyʻre in season.  Feel free to check out the site, right now we have Ice cream bean, Abiu, Soursop, Longon and more constantly being added.  Plus Iʻm pretty generous with how many seeds I put in each envelope.

My first experience with Lilith-vzla

Nothing personal against the seller, just sharing my experience.
Communication where always good.

Most of the seeds I received from my first and only order where of poor quality, not whole (holes etc.) and completely dead. There where only two species out of 5 that where alive and had already germinated quite a lot.
I can tell they where dead since they where rotten or disintegrated to mention two characteristics.
Paid for fast DHL shipping and it was delivered fast so I "assume" that some seeds where already old or dead when sent by this seller. Maybe they where stored in the bags for a while before dispatch.

No labels on the individual packages, except just "RED" and "Orange" for Eugenia mcvaughi (I assume). The others no label and I can't distinguish the seeds from each other.
Found only 2 seeds of Duguetia lanceolata (I assume cause no label) when 10 was paid for and the seed medium where very old despite the fast DHL shipping. (Maybe the other where disintegrated, idk)
Have not seen this old/decayed seed medium in other sellers packaging or when I have sent myself even if transit was over 4 weeks.

update: The seller told me that there is a reason for not putting the name on. and maybe that seeds might have been lost in transit. Offered to send again.

Sad to have this experience and money wasted.

My experience with fermamo, Cameroon
Good communication, fast at shipping out, and decent packaging (these days he packages better with more padding), quality is good but sometimes the transit time is very long unfortunately.

My experience with Forest house
Good communication, never received anything cause always got lost or returned, even DHL returned for some reason and FHC where ok with dealing with that and offering to resend.

My experience with Mick Mick
Very good seed quality and plant quality. all good.

My experience with Poscii
Very good seed quality and sends fresh and fast, good at packing, easy to communicate with. All good.

I do acknowledge that if seeds don't germinate or arrive it's all the sellers fault, I do take some responsibility too.

Peace,
cassowary

update: The seller told me that there is a reason for not putting the name on. and maybe that seeds might have been lost in transit.

Peace,
cassowary
Do you have a link or contact for fermamo Cameroon ? Thanks

Does anyone know where I can buy Psidium Salutare seeds, besides a member huertasurbanas?  These are creeping bush type guavas, not tree types.  Thanks for any info.

The best way to contact him would be to send a "Private message" to his profile on this website. Look up his last post in the "sale" section and go to this profile from there and send a PM.

Hi, do anyone have "Nam Doc Mai #4 " (NDM #4) seeds? I would like to grow NDM from seed. Being a polyembryonic mango,  it can produce a true copy of the parent tree. Also, there will be a vigorous growth for So.Cal cold coastal weather.

Mahalo Nui Loa.
Sean

Hi guys I can verify Sean is very generous, 3 healthy abiu seeds for great prices!

Hi Everyone,
I am new here and wonder if there are other rare seed suppliers that can ship to Thailand. I'm helping a botanical garden in Chiang Mai to find some seeds and already checked the recommendations here and they don't have what I need available  :-\  I'll appreciate any leads
Best wishes,
Tania

Hi Tania,

Welcome!
I think it depends alot on what exactly you are looking for.

What might also work is posting a WTB(Want to Buy) post in this subforum and list everything you are looking for.

Hope that helps!

Sadly,

Ordering seeds internationally = Throwing your money away.

I've had some successes over the years. But mostly failures. I don't think I'll ever try again.

Anyone else thinking about ordering seeds internationally, please just save the money and paypal me that amount instead. Sure you won't get anything in return, but at least your money will be going to help a good cause. I could really use some help keeping our 10-hectare food forest project going here in Peru.

My paypal address is my email address: scottmobar@gmail.com
I'm kind of posting this tongue-in-cheek, but thanks in advance if anyone actually sends me funds.

Here's a recent video showing one small section of our project. Most of the land is hills, but this is one flat area close to the creek.

Anyone have experience with Gardens Under Sunlight.  Their website https://www.hardtofindtrees.com/ suggests that they sell actual trees, not seeds.  But there is no indication of their location.  Are they located in the U.S.?

Very much agree with this! I've had problems with a couple sellers on this list and they did not resolve the issues in a manner worthy of note or just straight up ignored me.

I highly recommend Kameron with Bellamytrees. Every time I've reached out with an inquiry, concern, or problem he resolved it in a favorable way. IMO, hes the best professional seller in the exotic seed biz. His customer service is unparalleled and nothing short of incredible.
