@Floridagreenman  yeah they call sugar apples "annona" here in the D.R. also but the rollinia which is not very well known, is called Candongo locally. I tell people, hey you know Guanabana is also an Anonna, and they just give me a look.

In Latin America 50% of all fruits are either called 'zapote' or 'anona'...  :-\

Within my family, we call Sapodilla "zapote" and anon is referred to sugar apple.

Another reason why common names are so confusing and often not very helpful. BTW, i suggest folks add the latin name to their posts when possible for this very reason, so we all know what you're talking about!

Here in the Miami area, if you stop at any Cuban fruit market and ask for Cherimoya, they think you are referring to Custard apple (A.reticulata).  In Puerto Rico Reticulata is called Corazon and I have seen Rollinias there in the markets and they are always labeled "Anon" Yes, in the perfect world we would have the Latin nomenclature but it's not happening anytime soon!

I've tried to PM you but got this message, "User 'ASaffron' can not receive personal messages.". Is there some other way I could contact you off group?

Still not working, Adam. I'll stop posting this so as not to annoy the group and keep trying until you got this resolved on your end.
BTW, you don't have email setup.

Luc, since you're in the annona country, if you have some pix to share, it'd be awesome. Merci d'avance.

BTW,

this fruit's thick skin is a chalcid wasp's worst nightmare.

I don't think oviposition is  going to work!

the layer of creamy flesh that is close to the skin (usually granular on most sugar apples) I'm sure helps reduce infestation from flies as well.

Maybe this tree had to really defend it's seeds from seed boring organisms during in the past, and devised a method of reducing infestation by means of thick skin.

Luc, so sorry for the insult. My bad!!!
To make it up to you, here's a funny story about french-flemish fraction in Belgium. Told to me by a flemish friend:

"In a factory in Belgium, french speaking workers are put in a seperate area than the flemish. In the french part, there is a sign that reads "Here we speak french". In the flemish part, there is also a sign and it reads "Here, we don't speak, we work!"."

The thick skin is mean of protection alright but probably not from seed boring insects as they could go easily in the crevasses (not sure how this is spelled). The rough skin simulates stones/rocks and is probably a visual kind of protection. Maybe against birds or bats?

Probably the nicest sugar apple I've taste, and certainly the largest...I planted seeds from the fruits I ate a while ago, and they fruited last year...I noticed the fruits were not like the mother tree...So I collected some scions from the mother tree today.  I'm excited to graft some of these.

I think this variety makes a larger tree than most squamosa...(the tree has recently been pruned, so it's not full size in the pic).  It's only moderately productive though...so I'm guessing it would really benefit from some hand pollination.  The owner of the tree doesn't hand pollinate.
