Inducing Lychee bloom Florida
« on: December 31, 2018, 07:23:24 AM »
Last year, when it was in the low 40's at night I put ice on the lychee. It bloomed. Is this actually an effective way to do this or coincidence?  I put about 50# of ice around the roots on top of the soil. It lasted all night and half the next day

I think the low 40s by itself made it bloom. My neighbor's lychee tree bloomed last year during the cold winter and she doesn't even like lychees--so I know she didn't do anything to it.

I think for that to be effective, like during this year's warm winter, it would need to be done for a few weeks.

Temps in the 40s, for a long enough period will induce blooms in Lychee. I think it was a coincidence.

I’ve seen large, mature lychee trees loaded with fruit and I’m probably in the same zone as you.
